To be honest, I have no idea where my family was prior to the mid 1800s. The fact remains that we, as white people, have benefited from this country and a lot of it is on the backs of black people who were treated horribly for almost two centuries.
Blacks were used by the mass of this country to make huge profits; and many of those entities who profited off enslaved blacks are still in existence to this very day.
The abuse these people suffered (IMO) has resulted in the many problems in the black community to this day. That's merely my opinion though.
BTW, I do respect your opinion.
my father's family was evicted from their family home so the home could be turned into section 8. they made too much money and were thrown from their home. not really sure that my family benefitted from being white in this country. like I said before though. I think this is political grandstanding, and nothing more than a symbolic apology. it's a waste of time IMO.
Ok, read enough to see that some did not read the entire opening thread. This is an apology from the Government of the United States to those that are decendents of those brought here as slaves. It is taking responsibilty for an evil done by Our Government, As for reparations, it specifically addresses that issue, read the posting before going off on some tangent next time. Ax for the formal apology, I am 100% for it, it is waaaaay over due. Reparations, I am against it because those that should get it are dead, it would be nearly impossible to determine who qualifies and it punishes those that had nothing to do with it.

Please read my last post. BTW, my wife is Japanese so she had no connection with the abuse heaped upon blacks either.
I'm not talking about a personal responsibility; I'm talking about our responsibility as a COUNTRY.
This country benefited off the backs of Africans who were brought here involuntarily and put into a life of servitude. Should the country ignore what we did to these people?
I agree with everything that you wrote. Slavery was an atrocious pox upon this country; however the hidden agenda behind this is what make me raise an eyebrow.

You bring up a great point. But IMO, it was the white people in this country (of which I am one) that started this from the get-go.
All in all, it's a very complicated situation.
Actually, no. It was rich and powerful black Africans that kidnapped, enslaved and sold blacks into slavery. Btw, many wealthy, rich blacks, once freed owned slaves themselves.
