I guess that only one Republican believes in allowing everyone to serve in the military equally.

"Dozens of lawmakers urged President Obama in a letter Monday to suspend the policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and start working with Congress to repeal it.

The lawmakers urged Obama to direct the Armed Services not to initiate any investigation into the sexual orientation of service members and to disregard third-party accusations."

I think he is listening, but I also think that he remembers how doing away with prohibitions against gays in the military scuttled the Clinton health care proposal.

Karfar, he doesn't have the votes... that's what I don't understand about the gay community on this issue... he literally does not have the votes to have DOMA or DADT repealed (I believe DADT is codified). So would the gay community like for him to push forward a losing battle or quietly build consensus and get this damn thing off the books? I understand the outrage at the language in that legal brief but with respect to these matters, it's not good for the gay community for Obama to be out front of the legislators...

77/435 = 17.7%

That doesn't sound like a very good ratio of support if you ask me.

Thanks for that kind observation.

I wonder why the Republican ratio of support is 1/178 (.56%). They love to say that they believe in treating everyone equally without "special rights" for anyone. In this case, they obviously don't believe that.

dont ask dont tell, PROTECTS ALL

as an employer (military or not) I dont NEED TO KNOW your sexual preference

as an employer (military or not) I dont NEED TO KNOW your religion

what I NEED TO KNOW is that you can do the job, be at the job on time etc

you start TELLING by your sexual orientation, religion, political party, it just opens up problems

the fact is (as someone who just retired from the military) we don't NEED TO KNOW what a persons orientation is

as a leader, (or even a peer) I don't want to know what you are

what you did last night

who or what you did it with

your religion

your politics

what I need to know is that you will do the JOB

If I know then that opens up PROBLEMS,,,,****. h.o.m.o (can you believe it wont allow h.omo but it will allow hetro) or hetro

if you sleep around (even hetro) you pose a RISK (health, money, SECURITY)

if you do DRUGS you pose a RISK (military doesn't allow drugs either)

if you cant get a security clearance you are a RISK (and will be DISCHARGED)

Don't ask don't tell,, is the BEST CHOICE

That would be true if by telling you couldn't get discharged because of your sexual orientation. If you get "fired" from your job civilian because you're hommosexual it's discrimination. However, in the military, is the other way around. The law says you WILL get "fired" (discharged) if they find out you're involved in a homosexual relationship. See the difference?
