ithink of someone who could not possibly make a living on thier skill and talents if they were to stand alone so must find a cause as to attract thepeople looking for a messiah to lead them to a better life such as having what thier hard working neighbors have but without having to work for it themselves

What a warped view.

I think of people who are mostly low-paid but very committed to their cause. They can be conservative, liberal, or moderate. Sometimes they're part-time volunteers; other times they are full-time employees of nonprofit organizations. I've lived in a couple of cities where I thought of some of the city council members as community activists.

Wow..Sucks to be you. A community activist is an advocate for people in a particular neighborhood. Some are better than others and I'm sure some are unethical as with anything but for that to be how you feel about the term itself is INSANE

I think of the people who head up committees, go to city council meetings and have their say, collect signitures for petitions, volunteer for various community based organizations, raise money for different causes, etc.

I don't know how "activist" can be considered "user" or "leech" when they are doing the work that benifit you and the community in general.
