I keep hearing this thrown around but have seen absolutely no examples of how a test can be racially biased. Could someone pleas explain this?

PS Could this be explained WITHOUT a bunch of "screw conservatives" and "left-wing nutjob" comments?

I've wondered this too --- especially when it is a test geared for a specific profession as was the case with the Firefighters.

Generally this is refering to the language used in the exam and how closely it reflects language "in common usage" by a particular group or subset of a group. For example, if the exam were written using language only "in common usage" by 1st generation Irish immigrants lliving in a particular neighborhood of Boston, and the purpose for using the language was to confuse anyone not familiar with the language and thereby decrease their chances of success on the exam, then it could be considered a racist exam.

Basically that's what they are talking about. Hope this helps explain it.

The Firefighter test was racist because it was written in the Queen's English.

There are vastly different dialects of written as well as spoken English. At test could be biased in a manner so someone that did not speak a particular dialect would not do as well as someone that understood the specific form. It would be difficult to write but that is why consultants are paid so much. I would not be surprised if the Irish old boys club in the Boston Fire Dept's administration told the consultants exactly what they wanted and that is what the got; A subtly biased test to keep the blacks out of the management class.

What they need to do is have two test.

One for the smart people and one for the stupid people.

Kinda like they do for high school sports, have a high standard for the SMART people and a low test score standard for the STUPID people who can play basssetballl and cannot spell their own name.

Or like the SAT's, one group has a high number and one group of people a lower number. Purposely done because one group whines about being never given a chance in life.

Who would want a stupid ass on a ladder fighting a fire when we all know most of them started the fire to begin with.

Right!!!

If it were written in 'ebonics' or "Latonics' maybe the minorities would have done better. I am glad that affirmative action has taken a step backwards today, and I think racist Sotomayor got kicked in the mouth today...

Screw conservatives and left wing nutjob!

Realtalk: Saying that the tests are biased is just a way of excusing poor performance.

Basically what it comes down too is this:

If minorities fail the test regardless of what is in it, it is considered racist. This is where "affirmative action" comes in. On most tests, minorities are automatically given a passing grade. So even if a white person scores 100% on a test, and a minority scores a 60%, the minority will be offered the job because its considered "Fair".
