CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - Obama’s approval rating remains steady, poll says « - Blogs from CNN.com

"WASHINGTON (CNN) – A new national poll indicates that President Barack Obama's approval rating among Americans remains steady.

Sixty-one percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday say they approve of how Obama's handling his duties as president. Thirty-seven percent disapprove."

The President is at 61% which is slightly down from his post inauguration high but still very good despite relentless attacks from conservatives on everything from his handling if Iran to date nights with the Wife. Have conservatives dilluted their legitimate attacks with the many contrived ones or is Obama just untouchable? I think most Americans including conservatives are sensible in understanding that Obama was straddled with a disaster and will give him time. I also believe many who oppose him in say conservative circles agree with what he's doing but just aren't in a position to outwardly admit to it. Time will tell but as it stands, conservatives may want to try a different stategy.

The average of polls shows a steady decline, but more interestingly the disapproval index is up sharply. This implies a lot of "on the fence" (i.e. objective minded) individuals have gone to the anti-Obama camp.

It is still early on in his Presidency, I don't think people will be out in droves to give him a disapproval rating until he's had more time. I think in 2.5 to 3 years when misfortunes can't be written off on Bush and it's clear larger government decreases individual wealth, that number will take it's due hits

61% is rather on the higher end with Rasmussen on the lower end of the spectrum... all polls do show declines... not untouchable... rather he is just like any other past president with declining poll numbers after winning the election... nothing out of the ordinary if strictly looking at poll numbers... I notice CNN and ABC news are more of a liberal news organizations... I think maybe CNN takes in more liberal votes to give it its error just like Rasmussen takes in more republican votes to give it its error...

Obama will be fine in the polls for a few years. When the true cost of his government programs and resulting spending is seen down the road, his numbers will fall dramatically. He will survive his first 4 years and may get elected for another 4. In the end...people vote their pocketbooks. The inevitable tax increases over the next years will turn the country against the Dems again. I'm no fan of Bush and you can see that the incredible spending in Iraq and the downturn in the economy combined to sink the Repubs hopes of another POTUS last year. This will come full circle on the Dems also. In the end most people do not believe that the government is a better steward of their funds than they are and that most government programs fail both in efficiency and results.

Rasmussen is the only poll that has ever had Obama's disapproval rating at above 40%. They currently have it at 44% and have had it as high as 46%.

To build on your statement; it seems it takes much longer for it to come full sweep on the Republican than the Democrats. Jimmy Carter ushered in a long era of Republicans (save Clinton) and final do they have a clean sweep with the GOP left thumbing their butts, but from the way it looks in the next 8-10 years I foresee another Reagan revolution.

The disapproval average steepened upwards almost immediately after inauguration. That implies people "on the fence" (aka independents) began disapproving shortly after the election.

RealClearPolitics - Election Other - President Obama Job Approval

Since there's too much debate on Rasmussen vs Gallup, the average provides the consensus and is much less prone to volatility or bias.

Your camparing unnaturally low disapprovals from after the inauguration to today. That's a false comparison. Sort of like comparing the fake economy we had under deregulation compared to the real one we're going to be living with for the forseeable future. The fact remains that he has not loss much steam in any poll despite being opposed and attacked on EVERYTHING including when he grabs a burger.

Honestly it's too early to be making calls. IMHO you need a year, time for programs to take effect with Joe Mainstreet to get a good feeling.

All these bills, programs, bailouts are still fairly new and haven't had time to get fully into the system and be felt at the lowest levels.
