I was undecided as to who I would vote for but I was leaning toward McCain. When he picked Palin, I had no idea who or what she was. I did an extensive 'net search on the woman. Her cronyism, vindictiveness, lies, poor decision making as Mayor of Wasilla and total disregard for her unborn child (traveling thousands of miles in labor) made me an Obama supporter. What came later during the campaign only enforced my decision.
That exactly describes a lot of (up to that time "undecided but leaning McCain") people. At about that time the local Obama offices started getting lots more volunteers and more money rolling in. For several weeks after that I heard a lot of people, especially women, going on and on about how great she was. Of course none of them knew anything about her other than one speech and that she looked "hot".

With each passing day I heard fewer of the "she's just like me" comments and more of the "there's no there, there" comments.

Todd Purdum Discusses His Vanity Fair Article On Palin: "Desperate" Decision That Revealed McCain's "Appalling Egotism" To His Staffers

"Essentially, Purdum describes a 'desperate' campaign which 'took one of the great leaps of faith in American political history.' However, the lack of deliberation and vetting behind the decision backfired on the campaign".

Rove's choice of Palin shows his utter cynicism: "We'll pick up the Hillary
voters if we go with Palin!" A touch of misogyny as well, I might add, to
assume that women are that dim. His much-ballyhooed political acumen
totally failed in this case: feminists thought, "Beauty Queen contestant?
Say what?" And the infamous "turkey murder" footage sealed her fate with
many voters, especially those whose children saw it and cried...then refused to eat turkey ever again. I watched many women go through the
same thought process that you describe..and there is still "no there, there." She had to give most of it back.
