So it's an old maxim to 20-year olds.

And the fact that it's an adaptation of a much older saying is, well, who cares except old people? Because the adaptation referred to commercialism, but the way it's being referenced in this thread, in the POLITICAL forum, makes the reference to the original maxim all the more telling. But hey, why would anyone want to understand historical references?

Not true. Having a broken state constitution will lead to that though. Last I checked slamming something into the constitution that makes it really hard to raise taxes isn't what most Americans call "liberal".

I'm not stating that it's a liberal or conservative ideology problem, just so that's clear.

This is basically what vonBrunn was saying. He's seen 88 years of the decay, then flight, then repeat again! Plus the two established political parties (GOP included) have turned America into a bankrupt, multicultural slum!!

What can anyone do?
Who are you???

And why are you referencing someone who decided to open fire at the Holocaust Museum?

What happened to all the people that make fun of "doomsdayers" on the forum and proudly assert that everything is really OK? I haven't read one thing on this forum today that isn't depressing. Someone lie to me and tell me I'm crazy for believing the world is comming to an end.

I won't like to you, but I WILL tell you the world is NOT coming to an end. It's the old HopenChange thing, ya know? It'll be okay, just different. Now THAT will be something to shed tears over.

I've decided I will have to do one of two things: either move to Siberia to be safe or stop looking at the internet.

"Happy place....Happy place... where's my happy place?!"

Shhhhhhhh..I was in this camp last year. But I considered myself more a realist then doom & gloom. Quoting Schiff and Roubini put me in their camp. I didn't come to this forum too much because it was mostly "gay", "abortion" and other social issues..nothing with any meat in it.

These days though..politics is my first category to dive into and then business.

Ok..so now I tell you the world is NOT coming to an end. It won't go back to where it was before, but where it was before was a fairy tale that cost too much.

Prepare like we're heading into a depression. Really..just prepare for it.
If it doesn't happen..you are no worse off and a little richer with the bank account and have food to last a year.
If it does happen, then my friend, you may be better off than your neighbor who still buys his mocha-latte-frajatte every morning for $5.00 and is living paycheck to paycheck.

Not everyone suffered greatly during the Great Depression. Those with no debt survived.

If I posted this stuff a year ago vs today..what do you think the comments would have been ?

Can/Should any lessons from California's predicament be applied at the national level?

Yes, cut taxes, reduce services and send your legislature home.
