I really dont think truely crazy people intent on harm care if people are packing or not, It could become a my gun is bigger and faster than your gun situation at some point.
That's nice, Akgrl. That attitude should come in quite handy should you ever encounter an enraged moose, though that's far from likely here.
I'm a gun owner too and I left overconfidence behind a long time ago. Up North we call that survival.

I bet you did need a gun there huh? Rough Country?
Pretty much. Moose are unpredictable and in the winter they do tend to hang around human habitations. I lived in the bush with no close neighbors. Moose calves winter over with their mothers which can make for some tense situations.
Bears pretty much leave you alone here but; farther north they can be more aggressive.
Well, here's something else for y'all to chew on. When we went through Ivan and Dennis a couple of years ago, we didn't have much looting going on. Know why? 'Cause most folks around here knew that it was a real strong possibility, that they would get shot, by people protecting themselves, and their property. In fact, a number of people had spray-painted signs on their homes, warning people that they were armed, and that looters would be shot. Some of them probably didn't actually have a gun in the house, of course, but it was still a deterrent. As has been pointed out before, criminals don't want to take the chance on being confronted by an armed citizen. Now, that might not mean much to those of you who would like to see all the guns dropped into the first available volcano, but to us, it meant alot. We couldn't rely on the police or the county deputies. There was no way they could be everywhere, (for goodness' sake, they can't under normal circumstances). They had their hands full, trying to help folks, when and where they could. Not to mention the fact, that it is pointless to have to wait. Chances are, you'll be dead or badly hurt, long before they could get to you anyway.
It would be nice if we didn't live in a world where we have to protect ourselves against the two-legged predators. But, as long as we do, kindly keep your hands off of my guns, and my right to self-defense, (which, by the way, we all have). If you don't want to own a gun, that is absolutely your right. But, don't step all over my rights, and those of all other lawful gun owners, in your zeal to make this country a Utopia. There is so such thing, sorry to say, because there will always be those awful ugly people who want to prey on others, particularly if they perceive them as defenseless.
Again, when did anyone say you shouldn't have the right to protect yourself? No one has.
Do we have the technology to make it so a gun will only fire when the owner is using it? I believe it's possible.

So far it is the best idea possible, but I think only useful in the stolen gun isses. This guy bought his guns, my question is why if he was found a danger by a court in 2005 did that not come up with his gun check?

Oh, I know, but you have to cover all your bases. Well, at least as much as can be reasonably done.
If he was able to just buy a gun, how many other kooks have been able to do the same?

Anyone who is trying to meddle with my ability to defend myself, in the way that I see best, all in the name of social safety, that's who.
We had this conversation before. They may well have the technology, but just exactly why should we have to "trade-in" our guns? I like the guns I have, and I don't want someone else telling me I have to trade them in, which is simply a translation meaning, "Hand them over, or else. Oh, and by the way, you don't get them back". Why is it so hard for folks to comprehend that an overzealous meddling government does not have our best interest at heart? They talked real big about gun control, during Hitler's time, too. And, when they accomplished it, mouthing platitudes about safety, suddenly no one was safe, especially the Jewish people.
I am wondering why there are so many comments from people who seem afraid that their gun rights are in jeopardy here.
Even as an evil Demoncrat, I've always been more on the "side" of gun rights than not....pretty much because the gun control issues down south really weren't pertinent to where I lived.
But I really fail to see what the problem with background checks et al is and how that translates into taking your gun rights away.
