Michelle Obama just cost the Univ of California Merced a cool 1 million dollar for her just showing up for a commencement.

Ridiculous for her to even go knowing it was going to cost the school that kind of money they cannot recoup.

Crazy to think when she whines all the time about people being able to afford a college education and then goes out and spends a whopping 1 million for a visit.

What a shame, does she know how many kids could have had their bills paid with that money?

Guess she is not a thrifty woman afterall.

Michelle Obama's UC Merced visit cost school $1M - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090706/ap_on_re_us/us_michelle_obama_uc_merced_1 - broken link)
I love the way colleges pay politician just to show up and make a speech. Well the Obamas are no different than the Clintons were. Make as much money as you can before the people throw them out of office.

They invited her! The story was on NPR several weeks ago - about how they thought long and hard about it, then decided that it would be great for their image.

Image? I can't think of a single university that I attended (3 colleges, 3 degrees) where the commencement speaker factored into my decision to attend. If famous speakers are considered by today's college freshman as a reason to go to a certain college, I'd say its another sign this country is doomed.

This is a brand new university, graduating it's first class. Merced is a small town, and getting the UC was a huge thing for them. This was a really special thing for the city of Merced. Michelle helped put them on the map. Otherwise, would you ever have heard of Merced? If there is any blame to be placed in this, shouldn't it be on whoever projected the cost in the first place?

Perhaps her speech will be a boost for the school. A million dollars is pretty easy to spend, but in my conservative ways, I find it unconscionable that the total cost for one individiual to come make a speech is more than most American's will make in an entire lifetime.
