Perhaps you could be more specific about what you think was an anti-rich white man rant by Rev. Wright. If it is the sermon I think you are referring he was preaching on how Christ was not born into a family of power and privilege, but into a poor family. Not only poor, but into a sub-group within Jewish society that was looked down on by the rest of the society. Rev. Wright was proclaiming that God did this to demonstrate God's empathy for the struggles of the poor and oppressed. He then related how Obama was also not from a powerful or privileged background and therefore would have more understanding for their, the congregations, struggles.

Rev. Wright is neither anti-rich or anti-white. In my opinion he does believe the the rich have a Christian obligation to assist others. Trinity UCC is the largest congregation in a predominately (85/90%) white denomination. The association is totally voluntary. If Rev. Wright and the congregation of Trinity were truly anti-white they would have left the denomination years ago.

I can help you with that:

"It is this world, a world where cruise ships throw away more food in a day than most residents of Port-au-Prince see in a year, where white folks' greed runs a world in need, apartheid in one hemisphere, apathy in another hemisphere…That's the world! On which hope sits!" --- Rev. Wright's "Audacity of Hope" Sermon, as cited in "Dreams from my Father" by Barak H. Obama.

Rev. Wright's sermons are notorious for bigoted comments about "white arrogance," "the United States of White America," and "the U.S. of KKK."

Wright did not confine his bigoted and anti-American remarks to the Trinity pulpit. On Aug. 23, 2007, he delivered a eulogy at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, Wright referred to America's Founding Fathers as the "fondling fathers," called Texas "the cradle of dehumanization," made an ethnic slur about Italians and “their garlic noses,” repeatedly warned against “white enemies,” and derided “Africans who can out-white, white folks . . . [because] they’re British all down in their bones.” Wright cautioned mourners of “White supremacist brainwashing, passing itself off as education.”

Now we know why Obama sat in his hate-filled church for 20 years, because he truly hates whites and the United States of America. If that were not the case, he would have left decades ago. It also explains why the Affirmative Action President feels compelled to apologize for the United States everywhere he goes. The "Messiah" couldn't say a good word about the United States if you paid him. Wait! We DO pay him and he still has not said anything good about the United States of America. I guess that proves my point.

"Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people [blacks] are to be free. Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them."

-Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States of America

Thomas Jefferson was a fine one to quote on racial theory, as he bedded and fathered numerous children with his Black slave mistress Sally Hemmings (who just happened to be the half sister of his deceased wife).

Thomas Jefferson was a walking racial contradiction. As a slave holder he had a vested interest in the "darker race" remaining enslaved although he understood that it was an abomination against God.

First off, the information you provided is most likely not the incident that Reelist in Atlanta was referencing, since neither the "Audacity to Hope" sermon nor the eulogy for Dr. Asa Hilliard were included in the loops of Rev. Wright's sermons.

Since Rev. Wright has been a popular and in demand preacher, teacher, lecturer and author there is a lot of published material available by Rev. Wright. Stringing together isolated snippets from over four decades of his work does not provide accurate picture of who he is or what he believes.

Rev. Wright's "Audacity to Hope" sermon is from the 1980s. An era when South African apartheid was still in place and Ronald Reagan was refusing to lift a single finger to oppose it. He was quite willing to endure the suffering of black South Africans if to oppose it meant disruption to US economic interests. In my opinion "Greed" was a very charitable term. The whole sermon was about keeping your faith and trust in God even when there is no tangible evidence of God working in the world.

Also from the sermon.

“In spite of being in a world torn by war, in spite of being on a world destroyed by hate and decimated by distrust, in spite of being on a world where famine and greed are uneasy bed partners, in spite of being on a world where apartheid and apathy feed the fires of racism and hatred, in spite of being on a world where nuclear nightmare draws closer with each second, in spite of being on a ticking time bomb, with her clothes in rags, her body scarred and bruised and bleeding, her harp all but destroyed and with only one string left, she had the audacity to make music and praise God."

The eulogy you referenced was for Dr. Asa Hillard who was born in Galveston, Texas in 1933. He was born into a society that constantly dehumanized Americans of African origin. He struggled most of his life to overcome people who attempted to limit his horizons. Perhaps instead of enemies you would have preferred if Rev. Wright referred to them as individuals who were intellectually and morally challenged. Lets be clear, Rev. Wright was not targeting all whites in the eulogy, only those whose prejudice led them to actively work against Dr. Hillard.

Ohio.com - Akron attack victims frustrated with police response (http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/51253207.html - broken link)

Quote:
Those who witnessed the assault or survived it say this was no isolated incident, and the beatings to Greg Alchier and his friend, Marty Marshall, extended farther than Girard Street that night. A third victim is identified in a police report. More are believed to have been treated for injuries.
''This happens every year; it just depends on which street they decide to go up,'' said Greg Alchier, 39, who has attended the neighborhood fireworks show for more than 30 years.
''There's always a bunch of kids trying to start fights with people. It happens every year, and nothing's ever done about it. It's just swept under the rug.''
