Because me as an individual can make a very small difference, as a country we can make a huge difference.
And I would deem who I give my money to (or the government would), I sure wouldn't let you decide.
As of right now, neither you nor the government are making ANY difference. Things become clearer and clearer as we progress.

It would be coming out of EVERYONES including mine, so your point is as usual, pointless.

I'm not making a difference because I'm not financially able to make a difference. That is why I have donated my time, because that is all I can currently afford. But I'm not cheap and heartless so when I am making money I won't mind donating it. And I will be making lots of money, just need to finish college first. I don't really care what you think, it doesn't change my actions.

Fine. Take your money, put it in a savings account, and at year's end YOU decide who to give it to.
BTW, this is what I do, except I don't need to wait until year's end. If I see a person in true need who is helping themselves, I don't hesitate to help. Just to make a point, I spent nearly 10% of my gross pay last year on charitable donations, so don't even mention my heartlessness or greed, as some have before.

I really didn't expect it to. However, you did say that you wouldn't mind the government mandating taking a little out of your paycheck each week/month for health care. Why not start it now?

Amaznjohn, we already pay these costs, indirectly. No more money needs to be taken. I'd prefer the money go for actual healthcare, rather than being used to buy a second yacht for a CEO.

Really, you're just trying to waste my time now. I can't believe I spend this long entertaining your posts. Ignored.
So then your not heartless or greedy, you just like being an ***hole on forums? Because that's all you do is bait and attack when I'm discussing being charitable.
Don't get defensive and start name-calling, simply because I caught you in your hypocrisy. When you get older and have children, you'll realize the benefits in helping others by forcing them to help themselves instead of catering to them. Please don't spoil your teenagers by giving them everything they want, without mandating that they earn it.

You referenced this previously. What specifics do you have that makes this a valid argument?

I'll use the pharmaceutical industry as an example. Below is a link to some financial data for pharmaceutical companies, in 1999. Yes, it's a bit dated, but I don't have time to look for more updated information, right now.
Look at the CEO compensation, at the bottom. That's where your money goes (at least some of it).
Beyond that, we have pharmaceutical companies advertising prescription medications, on television. I can only assume they are trying to create a demand. That's immoral, IMO. It should be solely the discretion of the doctor, whether or not to prescribe a medication. To try to circumvent this is unethical. Why not provide lower cost medication, instead of spending money trying to increase demand? If their drug is good enough, doctors will prescribe it. There's no need to artificially inflate demand.
Where does CEO compensation fit in with this? I agree that we need some profit incentive, for drug companies. It's what motivates them to create new drugs. But they have a conflict of interest. Healthy patients are not in their best interest, it's not good for business. A medicated populace is in their best interests. These CEOs are paid based on profit and loss statements, stock performance, and the like. They are not paid based on the impact they've made on public health.
That's why government is needed. We have a conflict of interest.
