If you were looking for a job and it paid $9/hour,it now makes only $1.75/hour over min. wage....
People rightly or wrongly will now look at jobs paying less than $10/hour as not enough money as it is close to min. wage.
It also means employees who are currently making $8.50/hour for example will be just above some new employee coming in off the street....and might feel a little peeved about how their pay isn't increasing.

Very good point. If you've worked up to $9/hr and a newbie comes in making almost as much, I can see that person being upset and now wanting more.
Exactly...."The new guy just got here and is making a dollar less than me and I have been here a year...I need a raise too"....
Of course good luck getting raises right now.
The single biggest group in favor of increasing the minimum wage is organized labor. That may seem strange since union workers don’t earn the minimum wage.
Actually, most union workers earn several times the minimum wage. What do the unions have to gain by a higher minimum wage?
Simply, if unskilled workers are getting an increase in their wages, then there is one more reason for the skilled union workers to get at least that much increase in the next collective bargaining period.
Therefore, the minimum wage increase effectively wages in many parts of the labor force.
Actually Wal-mart pays an average of $8.23/hr at it's stores. So it's quite possible that some do receive minimum wage.
It's good to see that these large companies can pay better, OTOH, small business, restaurants, etc... will take a hit.
Your figure is from 2001. They average $10.11 today and due to heavy criticism they have made a big deal about paying above min wage. In the past they have supported the hikes to federal minimum wage.

That number seems more appropriate. Like I said that is good they they can do that. Heck, just raise milk by one cent a gallon will cover any increase they may have for their min wage employees.
nothing helps unemployment rates like taking more money out of the employers hands.

You are absolutely right. The Democrats did the exact same thing in the late 1970s and it pushed unemployment even higher. As Yogi Berra once said, "this is like deja vu all over again." Experience teaches us that we never learn from our past experiences.
Walmart can easily cut more people and make due.
Take a look at the checkout lines....30 registers but only 4 are open.
Tables of picked over clothes; racks with mis matched items. And they stay that way as people are doubled up in depts now.
It's obvious they have cut back and can cut back more.
If the job of taking care of the customers and still make money could have been done with less employees in the past why were these unneeded employees hired in the first place? Having these extra staff was not fair to the stockholder and investors!
It reminds me of companies that after they announce a huge layoff say that the reduced workforce will have no impact on the services provided by the company. If that is true what in God's name were these staff members doing before they were hired and why were they ever hired?
