On July 1, the U.S. military initiated Operation Khanjar or “Strike of the Sword,” an invasion of the Helmand Province by 4,000 Marines and 650 Afghan soldiers.
Strike of the Sword” represents the first military operation to be ordered by President Obama.
Quote:
ABC Correspondent Mike Boettcher, who is embedded with Golf Company, reports that the young Marines, when ambushed by Taliban forces with automatic weapons, were ordered to shoulder their rifles. Their command, Boettcher writes, warned them that “one civilian casualty could negate the No. 1 objective of this operation – - winning the trust and respect of the farmers of the Helmand River Valley.”
How are the Marines expected to win the trust and respect of the farmers?
By not disturbing the opium poppy fields which remain in full bloom.

opium is big business. Can't impact big business even with a war.

Well....it seems that it is better to have the opium produced and out there killing people as heroin than to upset the farmers...

Next move is to have the military help them harvest and process it.
That might gain the farmer's respect.

Our young men are going to get killed out there. I had to research this message myself and see it is 100% accurate. What am I missing here? If my son was in this mission, I'd be at the White House pitching a royal fit. How long until the Taliban figures out our guys aren't shooting back and then captures them and cuts their heads off.

Why dont you "pitch a royal fit" and tell President Obama that the so-called "Taliban" are often innocent civilians who are dying so the U.S. can expand its empire. Then you'd have a real reason to be outraged and not get upset over rightwing agit prop

I guess actually using critical thinking skills is too much to ask these days of most Americans, and almost all Republicans
