If you are liberal or a democrat, do you believe that Al Gore really won the state of Florida in 2000 and thereby rightfully won the election, only to have the Supreme Court take it away?

No, officially, Bush won, but I do believe that the thousands of votes for Pat Buchanan in Palm Beach County were intended for Gore. If I blame anything for Gore's loss, I blame the poorly designed "butterfly ballot" in that county. I do feel bad for Teresa Lapore, the woman who approved the ballot. She received death threats after Bush won.
And to a certain extent, I blame Ralph Nader. Most of the votes for Nader clearly would have gone to Gore if Nader hadn't been on the ballot.
Nice honest answer AUM. I have seen quite a few on this board state that the supreme court stole the election for Bush. I was just wandering is this nonsense is a widely held opinion on here among libs/dems or if it was just a select few.

It doesn't matter what anyone's opinion is on this matter. Bush won the supreme court vote 5-4 and then drove America straight into the ditch for the next eight years.

I do think the Supreme Court should have allowed Florida to settle the vote on its own. They obviously didn't think that states' rights were important when they made that decision. In that respect, I could see how some might say that they "stole" the election for Bush. However, your question is, "Do you believe that Gore really won Florida?" My answer to that is "no" because the official vote count was for Bush. If Florida had been allowed to continue counting votes, who knows if that would have held.
I don't know the recount was not finished and it did not extend to all counties so it would be difficult to tell. I was not thrilled about all the stays on recounting that were issued to slow the recount down, and the possibility of irreparable harm argument, but at the deadline Bush had the most legal votes so he won. Would the results have been different if a full recount would have taken place? Who knows.
The recount should have been permitted to take place. It is to the GOP's shame that they instigated lawsuits and fake riots in order to stop it. And it's to the SCOTUS's great shame that the conservatives on the bench threw out their states rights principles in order to create a horrible decision. That they violated their own principles in order to ensure Bush's victory is sickening.
I'd add that I believe Gore would have won the hand-recount, had it been applied across the state rather than in a select few counties.

And it's interesting how they said that their decision was a "one-time only" decision. In other words, they knew it was on such shaky grounds that they didn't want it to be used as an example in any future court cases. That says a lot.

I believe it because it's true. And I do not belong to any of your silly parties or any wings.
The Dictator Bush will be procecuted for war crimes after his partner in crime Chaney gets his.

Pretty much sums up my opinion exactly - though I wouldn't use the word "blame" in regards to Nader. "Blame" implies someone be at fault - and I can find no fault with him deciding to run. He had perfect right to, and of course had a right to vote for him. I think the votes that went to him otherwise would have gone mostly to Gore - but I can't use the word "blame" for that.
