Jul 16th, 2009 | WASHINGTON -- The Senate on Thursday approved the
most sweeping expansion of federal hate crimes law since Congress responded
four decades ago to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

The legislation, backed by President Barack Obama, would extend federal protections
granted under the 1968 hate crimes law to cover those physically attacked
because of their gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Good - this will help put down homophobic hate crimes, misogyny hate crimes, and misandry hate crimes

Good! It's about time our nation practices what we so readily "preach" to other nations...i.e. equal human rights!

I actually witnessed a true hate crime about a month ago. I was at a bar, and 4 people come up to this guy and say, "are you gay". He says "yes, why?", and they start to beat the crap out of the guy... broken nose, missing teeth, etc until people broke it up.

There was no hate crime legislation in place (state, local or something) so it is being treated as a bar fight. The gay guy's dad is one of the sheriffs in our town, so it isnt being taken lightly.

I always thought a crime was a crime, as long as you did it on purpose. Sorry.. no real input on this post

You and Salon have done it again. You say that the Senate voted on that bill and all that happened was that Dirty Harry Reid attached it to the F-22 bill looking to either have it ride along with approval of the F-22 or get voted down with the F-22. NOw Obama does not want more F-22's because there is no real competitor for them available. In fact if the bill gets passed because of the F-22 he says he will veto it. How many bills has he vetoed up to now?

I hate the F-22.

Is that now a crime?

Cool news. I've been hoping for this for years, have said so many times in this forum. I wish people would read the link.

I hope this will silence the evango-fascist wingnuts like Dobson, Robertson, et al, who rake in tens of millions of dollars every year by claiming that gay marriage will ruin traditional marriage, and often claiming many worse things. I also hope that it puts "Rev" Fred Phelps and his band of hate-mongers behind bars where they belong, either in standard jail or padlocked in a nuthouse.

Our lives are too short to hate others for their color, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, age, or disability. Those who attack such people are nothing but cowards.

this is an absolute joke. there is no such thing as a hate crime. I wonder if cleveland brown fans who are attacked in pittsburgh for being a browns fan will be covered under this. somehow I don't think so. what about a poor person who mugs a rich person.
