Agreed. Talk of leaving senior citizens at the side of the road while giving illegal immigrants free rides is absurd.

I don't think Bush ever put forward an actual reform proposal. He sort of just had a series of speeches where he urged Congress to "take action" without defining the scope or nature of that action. That's probably the biggest reason that whole initiative collapsed.

I'm just attempting to make a larger point. I highly doubt these programs would ever get touched, because of exactly what you said, the 80 Million Americans leaching off younger tax payers would loose their heads if the program was touched. However, these same leaches are often the same one's complaining about other social programs like housing or welfare, so i find it a bit hypcritical.

Anyway, my larger point is that we institutied these programs and they're out of hand. We cannot pay for them anymore and i would suspect the samething will happen with nationalized Health Care.
Watch out bluefly, dorock might not respect you if you don't share it's opinion.

So it's all about you?
Those people you feel such contempt for are citizens who paid into the system for their entire lives.
What do you want to do, kill them because they're inconvenient to you?

Bush, tried to reform social security, but no one wanted to hear it, so we need to make the tough decision. I'm against nationalized health-care, we just cannot afford to have debt equaling more than 20% of GDP it is not sustainable.

I propose we take the tough steps to move away from Big Government and cut Medicare and Social Security or at least reform these programs, so they only cost us like a couple 100 billion a year as opposed to a trillion.

We'd have a budget short fall this year of only 288 Billion if we got rid of these programs. I think we should also get our troops the heck out of Iraq and reduce defense spending for the time being.

If we did this we could balance the budget.

Who is with me no more socialism, not here, not now, not ever????

If we cut farm subsidies and useless weapons (like the F-22) and unneeded wars (Iraq) we could save the same amount.

That was then. I'm nearly certain that the money I've paid into the system is gone forever. I'll be shocked if I get a single check from So-So security. Changing the system now might be acceptable and maybe even preferable to continually propping it up.

Obviously the OP does not realize the Social Security system was started in order to provide some money to the businesses that supply food, shelter and medical care to the elderly that "accidentally" lost all their savings in a massive financial and bank collapse. The effect on the direct recipients was, and still is, less important then the stabilizing effect after a financial collapse.

If we really want to reduce government spending we should stop subsidizing the Red states with military spending and agricultural subsidies. We do not need absurdly expensive “Star Wars” programs, overly sophisticated fighter planes, nuclear powered bombardment submarines if we realize we are at the stage where our Overseas Imperium is costing us far more then it is returning. We also do not need to continue the “get big or get out” agricultural policies that are destroying our nations farm economy by needlessly subsidizing the corporate latifundia.

We need to return to a sufficiently progressive income tax so we can return to a ‘tax and spend” economy instead of a Republican “borrow and spend” travesty.

By definition, SS is a Ponzi scheme. The first ones in are able to receive socialized welfare on the backs of those currently working. SS #1 received the most gain (something like 100,000% gain?) and the currenting youngins' will receive far less than they pay into the system. Like all good Ponzi schemes, it pays to get in first.

I had no choice except to "contribute" to social security during my 36 year teaching career.
Is it possible for some now to opt out, taking their money and investing somewhere else?

There is a loophole, but you have to go through a somewhat intensive process. Saggy might come by as his usual government shill self and try to convince others to avoid the process because you will be "relentlessly audited to make sure you comply". Don't let that scare you off. It has something to do with being a member of the clergy (easy to do) and you can only opt out once.

Those damned leaches who raised us! If the bastards would just die off we wouldn't have this horrendous class of entitlement seekers.

By the way, what wonderful shape Social Security would have been in the hands of AIG, Lehman Brothers and CITI!

That would have taught Mom and Dad!

From under what rock do these people crawl from under?
