I often hear people say "Congress isn't listening to us." I'm not sure if that means:
1. Congress doesn't react to protests or rallies
2. Congress doesn't respond at all to one-on-one contacts
3. Contact responses people receive shows the member of Congress isn't listening to the issue(s) presented by the constituent.
How many people here actually call, write to or e-mail their US Senators or their House Representative with other than a form letter suggested by some organized group?
What was the last issue on which you contacted one of them and did you receive a response?
Did you say you oppose/support the ABC part of a particular bill but received a canned response that says the Senator/Rep will work hard on the XYZ part of the bill? In other words, did the response address your concerns or just spout the Senator's/Rep's position either on the bill, in general, or spout the Senator's/Rep's position on the piece of the bill that concerns what THEY are for or against without regard to your concerns expressed in your contact?
I called and emailed my two Senators and one Rep about the Chinese flag to be flown over the White House on September 20. I do totally and vehemently disagree with this act, and I don't really give a tinker's damn what others think. This is MY country, too!

You might be interested to know that even Fox News* is reporting that this story is bogus. You might consider getting your news from a source other than World Nut Daily.
By the way, Fox also reports that "the Chinese flag has flown on White House grounds before, in April of 2006, when President Hu Jintao visited then President George W. Bush."

All I ever get back are form letters, and sometimes they put me on their monthly news letter email list.
I emailed my Representative and two Senators earlier this year ... I think it was in June ... concerning health care reform. I heard back via email from all three. Two of the responses seemed to be canned - relatively generic. But one directly addressed the specific concern I had.
Any feedback (often, in the form of questions and/or concerns) we give to our elected representatives is worth the time. Even if they don't respond, their staff will tally the correspondence received from their constituents. If they do respond, even with a canned response, I see that as a positive ... and since many people have the same questions/concerns/opinions on the major issues, I have no problem with canned responses.
On 10 August I hand delivered a three page letter, single spaced, detailing my concerns about and opposition to the various health care proposals, mostly pertaining to HR 3200, to my Representative's local office. I have yet to hear a response nor do I expect one. He's a scumbag.

Make sure you tell him in no uncertain terms he's a scumbag. I find that always helps to make sure you get a cordial reception.

Called both 2 weeks ago to urge support of presidents health care reform bill. . . . but. .. I live in a very "conservative" state. . . for me it is just an exercise, I don't vote for those guys anyhow!
I tried to talk to my guy today at his tent meeting at our Labor Day festival, but I couldn't get close. He was mobbed and I gave up.
