Seriously, look at it.

How much revenue could be gathered from import tarriffs before trade is squeezed off?

Our Federal g'ment spends hundreds of billions annually, and has for decades.

Even paring down and trimming g'ment, please feel free to explain how tarriffs are going to cover such a bill?

Why does the fedgov. need all that $$$?

Obviously trade would be "squeezed off" when imports became too expensive to purchase. This helped spark the Civil War when trade of farming equipment from Europe, much more superior and cheaper than equipment from northern factories, was tarriffed so heavily it put European equipment out of range of even the affluent plantaion owners and farmers.

And why does the federal g'ment need all those funds. Do you travel on highways? Buy good shipped on rail, road, air, or sea? Does our military not only protect our bottoms from foriegn agression, but assist in localized catatrophies? Does the Federal G'ment not contain Officials who make laws, as well as court systems to try cases? Does the Federal level not maintain public parks, libraries, and US monuments?

Certainly the outdated and extremely confusing progressive tax system needs to be corrected, perhaps even replaced. Certainly our Federal G'ment needs to be heavily pared down. Certainly welfare, SSi, and Disability programs need to be steamlined. But the g'ment would still need an income to accomplish it's stated goals.

Why would imports become too expensive from a simple tax?

No simply asking why imports would become SO expensive to be prohibitive to most people....

Assuming you're being serious...

A tax, tarriff or sales tax, drives the price up as the supplier must raise their prices to compensate and still maintain a profit margin.

Any imported item that is tarriffed too heavily would cost the supplier (and manufacturer) more, who would then have to jack up their prices to compensate and keep a profit margin.

The higher the sales tax and/or tarriff, the higher the price gets jacked up by the supplier, th more expensive that item becomes.

There would be a tax or tariff on imported products,as we import almost everything it would be quite profitable...there would be no need or logical reason to raise the tariff to a point that people wouldn't buy the goods.
