WASHINGTON - The House voted overwhelmingly Friday to rush $2 billion into the popular but financially strapped "cash for clunkers" car purchase program, heeding calls from consumers eager to keep taking advantage of thousands of dollars in trade-in incentives.

Just another government welfare program that will never end. Wait until all the sheep buy up these little putt putt cars and next thing congress will be howling about not getting enough gas tax revenue and will start taxing something else to cover it. Do what your told sheeple and find out what it gets you. Nothing.

Well there's an optimistic attitude.

By most accounts, the program has been a success. If it was "just another government welfare program", would Republicans have voted strongly in favor of it too?

And your assertion that these programs never end is false. Last year, I got a tax break for buying a heavy SUV. It was a one-year offer from the government. Also, the tax credits for buying a hybrid has been a limited offer. Many have bought Toyota Priuses only to be disappointed to find out that they were not able to get a tax credit.

This just shows how fast programs work that pass money straight out to the public. So fast that the government can't even keep up. This should be a prefect example of what should have been done with the $787 billion. It wouldn't have been stretched out over years and instead would probably be all used up in around 6 months and then it could have actually been called stimulus.

Well your wrong because my neighbor bought a prius and got the $4500. Who is paying that $4500? Sure aint Obama. Looks like 4 billion and counting. Why doesn't this come out of the stimulous money that hasn't even been spent yet? Nobody knows. Well democrats do as they gotta save most of that money to spread around you know election year and all. Also what will happen when folks realize that the new car they bought is say $350 a month instead of the $150 they were paying for their clunker or heck many were probably bought and paid for but hey $4500 too good to turn down. I may invest in a repo man business.

The teachable moment here is that when you allow people to have more of their money, in this case allowing them to have $4,500 dollars, they stimulate the economy, as they go out and spend it on products and services they want to buy.

Imagine if the republicans had their way back in January, and they had their one year holiday on all taxes. That would have pumped an immediate and targeted tax cut, not just a paltry 6% in the failure of a stimulus plan. The American people would have had more then $4,500 to spend on whatever they wanted, not just a few select cars that government decided upon.

We would have had people able to pay their mortgages, buy cars, buy clothes, appliances, and a whole lot of people would not have been laid off or lost their homes due to foreclosure.

Only a few Democrats are publicly keeping the door open (http://talkradionews.com/2009/07/house-majority-leader-open-to-another-stimulus-bill/ - broken link)to another stimulus, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland. Republicans relish the talk, saying it vindicates their opposition to the first, a $787 billion, two-year package enacted in February that they argued at the time would not create the promised jobs, be used for infrastructure projects of dubious value, drive up the deficit and was being passed in a partisan rush. They scored some points, there. The February stimulus package was rushed, and the public is turning sour on it.

You misunderstood. The tax credit for hybrids is limited, as I said, and its no longer available for Toyota Priuses. Your neighbor got the $4500 credit through the Cash For Clunkers program, not because he bought a hybrid.

The user does have a point about government reaction to the population when they follow the advice of the government. When they stop receiving the revenue they need from the gas taxes because of cars that burn less fuels, they will either raise the taxes more on gas or raise them somewhere else. It is very common, even on a local level. A good example would be the water system in Raleigh, NC. Last year, we had a drought and the government instituted water restrictions to save water. Well, the populace did so well being more conservative that the local government said they weren't getting enough revenue to run the water system anymore. So, they raised water prices. It's almost like we get punished for doing what is supposed to be the right thing you know. We are damned if we do, and damned if we don't, and the government has a tax plan ready for either situation. But I won't condemn the effort, because atleast regular people are receiving a helping hand from the government for once. So get it while the gettings good folks, because I am sure this program will not last forever.
