AP sources: Russian subs patrolling off East Coast - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_russian_subs - broken link)
WASHINGTON – Defense officials say two nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines have been patrolling in international waters off the East Coast for several days.
The officials tell The Associated Press that while they haven't seen such unusual activity since the Cold War, the military is not overly concerned. They say the Russians have a right to conduct naval exercises and are operating according to international law.
U.S. Northern Command would not comment on any details of the Russian submarines movement. But in a prepared statement, Northern Command spokesman Michael Kucharek acknowledged the patrols and said that the U.S. has been monitoring the two submarines.
Two senior defense officials provided details on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence.
They'd supposedly had backed off the last few years. They did have some issues with their subs, if you remember a few years ago. I don't remember the last time I saw a P3, there was a squadron at Andrews for many years. Friends in the Naval Aviation community have told me that the Carrier Battle Groups weren't being shadowed over the last several years by Bears as much as in the past.
Nothing new... we been doing this for years on other countries... we still have covert spies in other countries as they do in our country... all this "lets be friends" talk is just political grandstanding... until we withdraw troops and spies... we aren't really friends...
Perhaps a little message...be careful what you let Isreal do to Iran?
Or just a tit for tat.....back after the USSR had collapsed, we continued to monitor what was going on over there. When we collapse, I guess they should have the same concerns over the "security" of our nuclear weapons..........
The worlds' navies have been doing the same thing to one another for years, nothing unusual, except Russia is rebuilding/refurbishing their navy and naval presence.
