Phoenix, Ariz., Aug 6, 2009 / 02:52 pm (CNA).- “Health care reform is a good thing,” New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan told CNA on Wednesday during in interview in Phoenix, Arizona. However, if it “leads to the destruction of life, then we say it’s no longer health care at all - it’s unhealthy care and we can’t be part of that.”
“That having been said, the devil is in the details,” he warned. While the Church agrees on the “what,” namely, “on the reform and renewed, reinvigorated health care,” it has some things to say on how it is carried out.
The Archbishop of New York explained that the first thing that needs to be said is that “every health care system exists only to serve human life, not the other way around.”
“Human life is not some commodity, some customer, some cog that is at the service of a bigger system or some bureaucratic network,” but rather, it is “the end in itself and health care is how it is protected."
If health care begins to lead to the “destruction of human life” through avenues such as abortion, end of life care, or the discarding human embryos, then “we say it’s no longer health care at all.
“It’s unhealthy care and we can’t be part of that,” Archbishop Dolan stated.
Perhaps the Vatican should start selling off its treasures and real estate to pay for health services for all of the poor who need such services. I wonder if Jesus would support such a plan? Hmmm....
What a mess. Is this what you people want with UHC??? The minute public money is used for healthcare then abortion, in vitro, end of life, contraception etc. health care will be challenged by the Catholic church and the Right to Life people. This is why some things are best left to private enterprise.

And just as soon as his church starts paying taxes on its income and properties I'll welcome his opinion.
Here is a good exercise. Take the profits of a church, then calculate the taxes. Now, look at how much money they put out as essentially gifts to the poor and need of help. Do a comparison of percentage between the tax paid and the money through programs they gave out.
Now, lets look at your money earned, your taxes paid and the amount you gave as they did. Time to put your foot in your mouth? Good little ignorant person, now run along, I hear American idol is starting shortly!

"Under current law, charities have to go through an application process to receive tax-exempt status. Their case can then be reviewed by the IRS to see if they continue to qualify. Churches from established religions receive this status automatically. While some churches use their tax breaks to do good in their communities, others use their donations to build giant edifices on their un-taxed land."
"The only way to ensure fairness and eliminate abuse is to make churches apply for charitable tax-exempt status, just like any other organization. Those that are truly helping the poor should have the same benefits accorded to any other charity. Those who use their donations to worship only themselves should be taxed along with everyone else."
