FOX News Guests Didn't Like Hippies Or Black Acorn Members At Sen Arlen Specter Town Hall In Pennsylvania - 08/14/09

So do these right wingnuts not support freedom of speech, why do they want to keep people who support health care away from town hall meetings? There are after all dozens of websites directing protesters to attend these meetings with the sole intention of disrupting them......repugs are such whiners.

The video in the previous post reminded me of an article from Religion Dispatches...

What We Really Talk About When We Talk About Health Care

Quote:
This is not a public discussion, certainly not civil discourse. Indeed, it resembles nothing so much as an uprising among a post-modern Bible Belt whose buckle has come undone. But an uprising against what, exactly?

We will get health care reform, just hold on for the bumpy ride. We will win in the end.

I would really just like to know 2 things about this healthcare proposal.

1. What incentive does my small employer (who is in no way living a rich life) have to keep those of us he spends thousands of dollars on for healthcare benefits from sending us into the government healthcare system? He is a nice guy and he does the right thing for his employees, but if he is going to be paying for the government-run system, why would he spend so much money to keep us on the private insurance? Again, nice guy...not rich and certainly needs to keep an eye on his bottom line too.

2. Government programs are absolutely full of fraud, waste and abuse. Medicare/Medicaid fraud, people not paying income taxes, people getting unemployment and disability checks who should not be...the list continues. Why do we think the government would do a better job running a healthcare system? It seems to be very blase about fraud and even more passive about how much money it wastes. What I envision for our future under government run healthcare is newsstory after newsstory of people with "connections" getting referrals to all kinds of elective procedures. Those of us who do the right thing will patiently wait to see a doctor while those who have no qualms (or morals) will be heading to their friend, the family doctor, who will declare they need all kinds of pharmaceuticals, breast enlargements, heck even Botox. Once people find a loophole, it will be used (just as those getting unemployment checks for years do).

The system we have now is clearly broken. I just don't know why it's the government that needs to run it. Companies that need to make a profit are far more likely to keep a closer eye on things. I think the government SHOULD provide healthcare to those who are denied for a pre-existing medical condition. It's not their fault if they lose their job and when they find another, their illness prevents them from getting insurance. I think though, that those people are far smaller in number compared to those who just don't want that much money to come out of their paychecks. I think the government should play a large role in regulating the insurance industry which has clearly run amok. But for all the "horror stories" of people being denied treatment in order for the insurance companies to make money, there are thousands more of us who are receiving decent healthcare treatments who are terrified of the government slowly but surely running our insurance company out of business.

There are those who believe health care should be a right. That statement is evidence of mass insanity or cognitive dissonance.

Let me rephrase it so it makes perfect sense.
1. HEALTH CARE (someone's labor) is a RIGHT (protected by Constitution).
2. RECEIVING HEALTH CARE (someone's labor) is a RIGHT (protected by Constitution).
3. COMPELLING someone else to do or pay for my health care is a RIGHT. (uh - no, that is involuntary servitude)
4. Giving HEALTH CARE is a RIGHT (nope - unlicensed practice of medicine is a crime).
So you see that what the government says is "health care reform" is not.

If you truly want universal health care, you need to decriminalize the giving of care, decriminalize the purchase of medicine and medical machinery, expand medical training and education, and eliminate tort liability by "Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back."

But that requires a reduction in power, which the government is loathe to do.

Several issues with your argument at different levels, and understanding/further discussion will depend on your responses to these questions:
A- Why do you think your (small business) employer pays for your health insurance?
B- Why must he overspend?
C- Why do you want to protect health insurance companies at the expense of the owner of small business, who employs you, which stands to benefit via cost savings?
D- Could you opt out of group plan and get your own (private insurance) coverage? If not, why not?
E- Did you know that provisions are being made to ensure that individuals and employers don't dump their existing plans for cost reasons alone? Instead they must keep their existing plans.

How about you ask your congressmen to support creation of "private options" for SS and Medicare for those like you who hate government run anything? Those can be discussed separately from health care (or more appropriately, health insurance) reform.

Our government was framed in part to provide for the welfare of its citizens; access to affordable, quality health care falls squarely in that category. On point #4 you are incorrect. It is illegal to practice medicine without a license for remuneration. Please check the Good Samaritan Act,
and from what it was derived. If the measure of a society is gauged by its treatment of the least of its citizens, then America has clearly failed at that. Tort liability is cold comfort; my neighbor's orthopedic surgeon put in a partial knee prosthesis backwards. Aside from requiring a second surgery to correct the damage and many more painful physical therapy sessions, no lawyer will take her case. Why should such negligence go unpunished?
