Returning the tax rate to the same rate that the wealthiest enjoyed under Clinton years doesn't seem so unreasonable while people are suffering for lack of adequate health care. Now even the National Baptist Conference is backing reform...seems that Christians are finally realizing that helping the less fortunate is a virtue. Give away your money to the poor and follow him; that's what Christ asked of his followers. We earn well under $250,000 a year, but are ashamed that this country could have such low mortality ratings for both adults and children; well below many of the industrialized nations with some form of government-sponsored health care. I'd rather my tax money be used to cure or treat people as opposed to, say, paying farmers to not grow crops.
First of all, reform is needed, but I doubt you and I would agree on the what and the how. Also, you, and others like you, confuse charity with socialism. I, and people who believe as I do, strongly believe and support personal charity. I am vehemently anti-socialist. Socialism is evil. It requires the extortion from one person, the creation of a bureaucracy to manage the redistribution, and makes the receiver dependent on the "help".
And here are some of the suggestions from that report:
1) Modify or Repeal the Itemized Deduction for Medical Expenses
2) Modify Health Savings Accounts
3) Modify or Repeal the Exclusion for Employer-Provided Reimbursement of Medical Expenses
4) Limit the Qualified Medical Expense Definition
5) Modify FICA Tax Exemption
6) Extend Medicare Payroll Tax to all State and Local Government Employees
7) Impose a Uniform Alcohol Excise Tax
8) Enact a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Excise Tax

Having worked as a nurse for many years, I have no doubt that we'd disagree. During the period that Christ lived, there was no socialism...it's charity to care for the less fortunate, period. Your personal political status is of no interest to me; the topic of the thread is "Health Care." And yes...many millions of Americans are dependent on the "charity" that they receive...people needing radiation therapy, renal dialysis and other diseases find it extremely expensive and aesthetically displeasing to have radiation and dialysis equipment at home. As Wordsworth wrote, "The child is father to the man..." As you were dependent on others after birth, so you will be dependent on others as you age. Sooner, if you have an accident or suddenly are diagnosed with M.S., Lou Gehrig's Disease or some other catastrophic health crisis. "Personal responsibility" means little to a child with cancer awaiting a new kidney.
What evenstar said, plus charities rely on case finding (you may be a "case" that doesn't get found), and tend to look for the "deserving" rather than just the needy.

I am dependent on my family and don't look to others to pay for things I can't buy on my own, and that includes any medical procedure. Health care is not a right. And there is no mandate in the US Constitution for such spending. I don't care about your political beliefs either, and you can keep your hands out of my wallet. I will decide to whom I give my money and it won't be to some wasteful bureaucrat.
1) we will have over a $12 Trillion debt by the end of this fiscal year,
2) the Social Security and Medicare trust funds have been lent to the Treasury which then spent them,
3) the liabilities of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are estimated to be over $100 Trillion dollars over then next 70 years, and that these liabilities are unfunded,
4) the interest on the National Debt is around $400 Billion a year
5) Cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is around $860 Billion a year
6) Have given wall street a line of credit for a total of $23.7 Trillion
How can we afford yet another unfunded government program? You might want to ask the Messiah Obama to get out of at least one of the wars or stop bailing out his friends on wall street.

May you never find yourself in need and not be able for you/your family to afford to meet that need.

Over a million families in the U.S. go bankrupt due to unexpected medical situations every year...good luck.

Thank you and I send you the same wish. I don't wish to saddle our children and grandchildren, etc. under more crippling debt and subject them to the debt slavery we are virtually under now and will be crushed by in the not so far off future.

Yes, and that fate could befall my family as well. But we prepare and work hard and hope for the best. We can't have everything. So unless you get on the Messiah Obama to bring the troops home and/or stop bailing out his wall street friends there are choices that will have to be made.
You have to stop burying your head in the sand and recognize the obvious. We are broke. And all you are suggesting is to further debt and tax slavery.
