I have been on unemployment once, lasted a few months and that was that.

But I am wondering what happens when benefits run out and you are still unemployed, what is the person supposed to do???

Quote:
Jobless benefits run out in record numbers

Just as first-time claims for unemployment insurance surged in the sour economy, final payments – made when laid-off workers have exhausted their initial benefits and all extensions – are climbing, with Mecklenburg County numbers more than double from a year ago.

As a result, more people are seeking help from already strained assistance agencies and trying to find creative ways to generate income, from babysitting to braiding hair to refinancing loans to taking on roommates.

Relief, in the form of new jobs, doesn't appear imminent, based on the latest labor statistics. The national unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent in June, a 26-year high, with companies cutting 467,000 jobs – more than economists expected. Charlotte-area unemployment has outpaced the nation, reaching 12 percent in May. Economists expect both numbers to rise further before the end of the year.

The imminent floodwaters bursting through the dam.

Look for GREAT bargains on foreclosed real estate in about 12-24 months, nationwide. You ain't seen NOTHING yet. I think it's cute the government thinks it can stop the falling prices.

Seriously, what ARE these people supposed to do???

Think about it,if we keep losing jobs at the rate of 500,000 a month for the rest of the year we are in for a time in the future.

I guess the fedgov. could print more money to keep people on the dole but still...

Do exactly what you did in 1981, when the unemployment rate was this high. What happened in 1981 when this happened?

But...but...but... that's a SOCIALIST benefit.
"We don't need not stinkin' Socialism!" - isn't that the type of thing YOU folks are always harping on - so CLEARLY the unemployed must not need that benefit. They just need to "stand on their own 2 feet and quit running to 'nanny" government for help"

You got it.

I do have sympathy for those laid off, especially in areas of work that are continuing to lay off, which means you aren't getting a new job there anytime soon. I feel like the unemployment program should be a little more involved, like offer some type of computer training or some other training that is cheap to administer but key for diverse skill sets.

You can't just repeat the same solution if the causes are different.

Volcker raised interest rates to 20%. We need something like this again, but prepare for an absolutely devastated economy.

The unemployment rate now using the same figures as used back then is much higher.

In 1994 it was decided to change to using the U-3 figures.

Actual U-6 figures right now are close to 17%.

And as I wasn't around then, please tell us what was done, what will 20 million or so people do for money once unemployment runs out.

Heh, well right now is more like starting at 1981, and time moving backward from '81 to '80 to '79 to '78. We won't see '81 on till 2012.
