Yeah, of course it's rude. Just like it's rude to yap on your phone while you're at a check out, at dinner, out w/a friend, etc. etc. Bet you've done all of those before. But one question: was the question FOR that woman as you claim?
That can be excused if it was an emergency. If not, it was totally unprofessional and out of line.
