"The message was clear. The sign carried by a 51-year-old man last week outside a raucous town hall meeting on healthcare in Hagerstown, Maryland, read "Death to Obama". Just to emphasise his point, a second message was also scrawled on the cardboard placard. "Death to Obama, Michelle and 2 stupid kids," it stated.

Welcome to the disturbing new face of the radical right in America. Across the country, extremism is surging, inflamed by conservative talkshow hosts, encouraged by Republican leaders and propagating a series of wild conspiracy theories. Many fear it might end in tragedy.

I also blame the (news) media....mainstream and cable. They all seem to be competing to see how close they can come to being the National Enquirer of news. Their whole focus has become "If it bleeds it leads." There are 70 town hall meetings where the citizens ask good, important questions of their representatives in a civilized manner and the representative provides their point of view in a sensible, reasoned manner....the "news" shows never show those meetings. But when there are a half dozen town hall meetings where the citizens act like deranged illiterates the "news" shows will play those meetings on an endless loop. They honestly don't care if they destroy this country as long as they can get a story out of it. I have lost all respect for 99% of the so called news media.

Didn't watch it and I won't.

I agree with your post LML but it is sensationalism that increase ratings and that's all the media is in it for.

Ask any military, retired or active, if they are permitted to be armed around the POTUS.

My deceased father-in-law was a career man. When Esienhower came to his abse for an insp[ection, my father-in-law stated that all ammunition and firing pins were confiscated, and even the officer's sword broken off at the hilt and the blades confiscated as well.

I doubt much has changed.

Utter nonsense. One of my great uncles (rose to the rank of Brigadier General in WWI, retired, went back in and served in WWII) met Ike face to face in the mid-fifties, with loaded .45 at side in his uniform...presidents in recent times have gotten increasingly paranoid.

And your great uncle was what rank when he met Ike?

And when did he tell you specifically he was armed at the time, and/or that his sidearm was loaded?

Doesn't seem like something that would come up much in conversation.

Calling someone paranoid is what the masterminds behind the plots usually say to throw you off the trail.

I don't condone death threats in general, but Bush was threatened based upon his stupid policies, unlike Obama who is being threaten b/c he is black. Before you start screaming about the race card, Obama was getting threats BEFORE he was president unlike Bush.
