Johnson, 51, said he would like that to change, but he believes the disconnect between blacks and nature has deep roots. Slavery, he said, forever altered how African Americans view natural lands.
I didn't realize we were allowed to go and "work the land" in the national parks.
What a ridiculous argument.
So the "memory" of slavery is inherent in those who never even experienced it? Handed down from generation to generation, the pain and suffering that the natural lands created in a never ending cycle of victimhood.
So it's just too painful to get out and see the natural wonders of the US?
I'm at a lost for words and maybe i'm looking at this completely different. All i'm going to say is, i'm glad he's proud of the work he is doing...but come on.
I was wondering when someone was going to make a thread about this.
I'm black and really have no interest in visiting a natural park. I'm not much of an outdoor person.
Considering the unemployment rate for blacks in this country with the recession going on, I'm sure the last thing some black people want to do is visit a national park.
I think the slavery connection was pretty [MOD CUT/language]
Who cares why black people don't visit the parks? It's not something I'll be losing sleep over.
I live in Minnesota and I do not see a lot of Blacks at country music concerts. I also do not see many Blacks at the Minnesota Twins baseball games. I have never seen a Black person riding a snowmobile here in Minnesota or ice fishing. I have met one black guy at our of our ski resorts here. I have never seen a Black person cross country skiing in my life before. Why do Blacks have to have a different culture?
I also don't see a lot of people at our cities Farmer's Market.
Last Saturday there was a church group or a family reunion but normally it's nothing but white people at the Farmer's Market.
I'm sure a bunch of us could talk about all the places we don't see a lot of black people.
When I used to attend rock concerts, I was one of the VERY few black people there.

The guy is trying to bring national attention to his role as a freakin park ranger. IMO ..The comments were TOTALLY misplaced.
This year, my girlfriend and I attended at least 3 county fairs here in Minnesota and I did not see ANY Black people at any of them. I am not trying to be a smart [MOD CUT/language] here.

I believe Prince has ridden a snowmobile and he may have ice fished too.
