Barney Frank responds: "On what planet do you spend most of your time?" He then calls her approach "vile, contemptible nonsense." He closes by saying: "Trying to have a conversation with you would be like arguing with a dining room table. I have no interest in doing it."

if you are going to criticize her, then he should be criticized for his response equally. they both took the debate away from its intended purpose in my opinion. there is plenty about the health care bill to dislike without the nazi / death camp discussions.
Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer. We saw what happened in the other townhalls when some dumbass told them to "Get the government out of my Medicare".

The discussion comes in disabusing the notion, not name calling and refusing to discuss it.

I know, strange concept for a liberal: talking and listening.

No, there was no discussion, the whole point was to align the Democrats with Nazis, which is a laughable notion in order to completely derail the discussion.

It would have been less idiotic to say "Why do you support this bill or idea", but she wasn't planning on doing that, and meant to frame the issue in a completely negative and outrageous light because she was more interested in making a (terrible) point and not interested in discussing anything.

Look, I don't care who is in office, I just want actual discussion take place and not the total **** we've been seeing from loud morons. If there was an actual discussion before we sank our fangs into Iraq the whole incident would have never taken place.

And this was not an opportunity to engage in discussion? Or was it merely an opportunity for both to engage in name calling?

Then, as an elected official and representative of the government, it was his job to dispute what she said, not to join in the name calling.

Actual discussion, yet you seem to support the action Frank took to evade discussion. Something not quite adding up here.

BTW, actual discussion did take place prior to Iraq. Both houses of Congress signed off on it.

Why is this challenging for you? Using a symbol that is culturally recognized in the western world to symbolize the atrocities of nazism is grossly inappropriate because what we are now talking about in this US is in no reach of the imagination anything close to what went on in Nazi Germany under national socialism.

If this is the reasoning that you want to follow, how do you know these people aren't demonstrating against Hinduism, in which the swastika is used as a religious symbol? What's more likely? That people using swastika's in the healthcare debate are using them to protest Hinduism or to make a comparison between 20th century Nazi Germany and 21st century America?

I've noticed that you like to charge others with elitism and lack of humility in a lot of your posts. Perhaps you should simply strengthen you arguments, rather than complaining about people's responses.

There were no town halls prior to going to Iraq, there were protests and Representatives were not directly engaged as they have been over the last several months.

Apparently your idea of discussion is name calling, I dunno why the representative in this case needs to be so high and mighty. The woman deserved no response and Frank handled himself appropriately. As I said "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer."

This is similar to going to a townhall with a Republican Rep and asking why the Rep hates the poor so much because they're planning on cutting Welfare. That is a similarly retarded question and deserves no response.

If I did something similar in a class the teacher would reprimand me for being a moron.

I dunno, I'm pretty done with this conversation since you don't seem to mind massive derails in public discourse so that your goal of killing a public healthcare option is accomplished.

I never implied Frank's comments were intelligent or informative - however I do believe they were effective. The woman clearly wasn't interested in having a civil and rational conversation. This has pretty much been the m.o. for those who are opposed to healthcare reform - show up at the town halls, make incendiary/irrational comments, yell, scream and be disruptive. After weeks of this nonsense, a Dems finally decided enough was enough and exposed these people for exactly what they are.

Now, if you feel Frank behaved inappropriately, that is your perogative. I, for one, am glad that an elected official has the balls to speak the truth to stupidity.
