Being from Colorado I know nothing about New York or what the politicians are like out there.

Any north-easterners who are familiar with Gulliani who could give their opinion as to how he was as a mayor?

Also were the big 1990s era crime rate decreases mainly because of Guilliani's policies or was it other factors?

Also does he tends to attract more voters or alienate them when he talks?

Do some searching and you'll find many articles, his reputation was somewhat less than golden on 9/10/2001.

I wasn't in NYC for his first run and I don't believe I voted for him the second time he ran.

Lots on him even here in P&oC - perhaps a quick search. I know I personally posted several times and in more than one thread about the former Mayor.

Pros:

He improved NYC's quality of life with a reduction in crime.

He's semi pro-gay rights. He pushed legislation providing protection for same-sex partners, but unfortunately will not support same-sex marriage.

Pro-choice. But I hear he's wavering on that lately.

Pro-gun control

Fought the Mob

Cons:

Converted Times Square into Disney World

Authoritarian- ran a police state (also a Pro...see #1 in pros)

Downplayed the health effects of the air around the towers after 9/11

Threatened to cut off city funding for the Brooklyn Museum if the museum did not remove some art work that offended the Christian community.

Echoed the sentiments expressed by other Republicans in election time by recently suggesting that the United States could face another major terrorist attack if a Democrat is elected in 2008. (Thanks OTR) . The Right-wing noise machine at work with their fear tactics, again.

Promoted the career of Bernard Kerik

And the number one con is...PHM ain't voting for a politician that has gotten his hands on The Chimps playbook (see #5 in cons).

Here's another little tidbit about the former Mayor, on C&Ls:

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/0...-civil-unions/

The mayor that supported gay rights backs off from civil unions! I guess he wants the conservative vote more than standing for his own purported beliefs. So, what are his beliefs, if they can swing so easily, and so disingenuously?

Boy, this is some lot the Republicans are hanging their hats on for '08, isn't it? Talk about flip-floppin' away...
