Navy records show von Brunn enlisted in 1942 as an apprentice seaman before accepting an appointment as a naval midshipmen in the volunteer reserves in March 1943. On his application for enlistment, the 21-year-old listed his reason for signing up as "patriotic." His records show he had language qualifications in both English and French after spending three years in college. He was discharged from the Navy in 1956.
Where did you read that? All I read was that he enlisted in 42 and was in the reserves in 43. No where does it say he served in WWII.
Quote:
It said von Brunn was World War II veteran who was retired from the Naval Reserve officer and formerly worked in advertising. The PT Boat Museum in Germantown, Tenn., told NBC News that James Von Brunn served as commanding officer of a PT boat during World War II.

If someone was in the US military in 1942 and 1943 in what way did they not serve in WWII?
As a WW2 vet did he not earn "the right to call it as he sees it in my honest opinion. The man served in the most deadly war to be waged on this earth and survived. In my opinion he has earned a little latitude."
And I stand corrected. Unfortunately there are bad apples in all things good. He can call anyone anything he likes, when they resort to murder, they have overstepped their latitude allowance.
I agree but he should have done more than repudiate, he should have chastised the moron for saying what he did.....Grassly has a history of being an idiot however ....here's a CNN report on this story:
Republican Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley Allows WWII Vet To Verbally Threaten Obama With Gun
Wow, your crystal ball must be flickering. I have no love for murderer's or anti-Semites. That is why WWII vets are my heroes. They stood up for people and waged a war against the evilest human to walk the planet in my honest opinion. Please quit trying to lump me in with insane kill the president loons. Nowhere does it say that the vet stated he wanted to shoot the president. You are not a top, please stop the spinning.
Jim can't help spinning. He gives the left a bad name because of that.

Back then volunteer reserves were in reserve and never served on active duty like happens these days. Ciaerin is not wrong, but you maybe have never been in the military. You sound like you never made it. If I am wrong please take this as an apology.

I accept your apology.
I believe you are incorrect regarding the reserves. They were called up for active duty in WW2. LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Bush were Naval reservists who served in the Pacific theater.
Navy records show that while in service von Brunn received the American Defense Medal; the American Area Commendation Ribbon; the Asiatic-Pacific Area medal with one star; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon; the World War II Victory Medal, and a European Theater of Operations medal with three stars.
Claiming that someone in the military during WW2, who volunteered instead of being conscripted, isn't a real WW2 vet because of their posting is really mean spirited. Many reservists saw more action than than conscripts who never left US soil. Some question what Tom Eisenhower (Grassley meeting) did in WW2 but I won't go there.
