Good Grief. The guy was carrying in accordance with the law or he would have been arrested.
You know, I have traveled places that Frommer has promoted, where there were armed guards standing around retail shops, banks and restaurants! And I have gone on tours with guides who had armed guards traveling with us (won't be doing that again!!! I learned to ask some questions). I have seen this in Belize, Honduras and Jamaica . . . and frankly, the fact that the businesses felt they had to have armed guards all over the place was more worrisome to me than a protestor showing up at a meeting. Yet, I don't believe I have seen a warning in Frommer's lit stating that if one wants to tour some areas in Jamaica or Honduras, make sure you round up several gunman to go with you.
Well, here's my thought. I like Arizona. Have spent some wonderful time there and look forward to returning. Screw Frommer. I am gonna boycott his products. I like Rick Steves' attitude better, anyway - so why give Frommer the business.
And I am gonna email all my friends who do a lot of leisure travel - and tell them about this, too. We may only amount to a few dozen folks, but at least I know those are a few dozen less books Frommer will sell in the coming year.

Pretty hypocritical, if you ask me.
At the risk at sounding naive...why the hell are people carrying guns around in what I assume are just regular neighborhoods? The places you mentioned are banana republics...is that what we are now? I live in NY and practically anything goes here, but I would quickly leave a neighborhood if there were people toting guns around. I realize that this was Arizona, but it wasn't Tombstone of the 1800's. I'm not a Frommer fan and I change the radio station when his program comes on, but this gun stuff is a bizarre.

Did you look at the photo? I had not heard a word about this til I saw this post, but I looked at the photo and there is one guy w/ a weapon in a crowd - and he was not aiming it at anyone. He was obviously in compliance with the law and I would assume must have had whatever permits the state of Arizona requires, or he would have been arrested.
This was outside a VFW hall, so it would seem likely the man w/ the gun was former military. If you look at the photo - you will see that the other folks around this guy were not concerned, which makes Frommer's protests even more ridiculous.

This is the part that I took note of in the article...
The police also acknowledge that about a dozen people carrying guns, including one with an AR-15 assault rifle, milled about outside the event at which President Obama spoke.
Carrying firearms, concealed or in the open, is legal and considered acceptable in Arizona. It is PART of Arizona.
Frommer is obviously anti gun / anti 2nd Amendment
