And you thought politics was confusing over here!
The Democrats have beat the Liberal Democrats who are more conservative than The Democrats! Can anybody sort this out?

TOKYO – Japan's ruling conservative party suffered a crushing defeat in elections Sunday as voters overwhelmingly cast their ballots in favor of a left-of-center opposition camp
The opposition Democratic Party of Japan was set to win 300 of the 480 seats in the lower house of parliament, ousting the Liberal Democrats, who have governed Japan for all but 11 months since 1955, according to projections by all major Japanese TV networks.

Aren't these the guys that shove and punch each other out in their version of Congress? If that was my country, I'd be contributing to the campaign of a sumo wrestler in my party. None of those wussy aisle-crossers need apply.

Hey I wouldn't mind if ours did that on occasion. In fact we could sell it on pay per view proceeds used to finance Obama care.
It's only confusing to us since we use "liberal" to define leftist economic policies. In Japan, Australia, and most non-English speaking areas in Europe, "liberal" is used to define rightist economic policies. If you've heard of the term neoliberal (free trade advocates) then you should have an idea of what I'm talking about.
The term "liberal" in some countries is actually a blessing, because it refers to LIBERTY, unlike the neo-liberal Obamatrons who are OCD control freaks when it comes to the economy. Liberty in allowing the markets to self-correct, liberty in allowing people to make their own personal choices on finances, and liberty in businesses to run their operations as they wish.
This was the first thing I saw in the paper this morning, and I was so excited! I've studied Japan for many years, and it's a been a one party system for so long, I never really expected this to happen. One of my friends just moved back to Japan (she lived here while her husband was in a grad program), and she was saying how unhappy people were with the current government. Hopefully the Democratic Party can provide a little more economic security and fix the birthrate problem. We'll see.
Japan has interfered in their economy so much over the past 15 years (with zombie banks and Keynesian retard policies), it has presented them with a "lost decade". If anything, Japan needs much less interventionism.
The good part is that traveling there is much much less expensive after their deflationary period.
The Liberal Democratic party of Japan (the conservative party) is also the party of Japanese imperialist apologists.
