I read that article last week, and thought it made some good points.
The draw-down in private basic research is certainly a concern. It is a difficult process to fund in today's environment, because of the high rate of failure associated with basic (vs applied) research.
It seems to me that the Government needs to be the central catalyst here. It would appear that some type of public and private partnership, perhaps though some of our universities, could get this basic research going again.
Frankly, it probably is our single most significant problem today. Most of the discussions taking place about stuff like healthcare has to do with how to divide an existing pie. The discussion about increasing investment into basic research has to do with expanding the pie, which to me is the single most important thing we should be doing from an economic perspective.
