And....Oh wait....let me put a windmill in my yard!
Better your yard that Ted Kennedy's (RIP), eh?

All the more reason to look for alternatives, eh?
I'm all for more fuel efficient cars FOR NOW and electric cars in the future.
Seems as though the auto companies, back during the oil bust, promised to develop alternatives to... whatever the crap they produce today. Took a couple of those renegade imports to finish the job. Buy American... Yeah, right.

Fuel efficiency is the no brainer in all this, but if we are ever to make the leap to plug in electric hybrids huge changes need to be made to the existing power grid to include adding numerous nuclear plants. Without that, the new electric vehicles will be underutilized because they will be expensive to charge. Right now, I don't hear anyone talking about new power plants.

One alternative is coal which we have plenty of. The process is actually quite old dating back to at least WW2 when the Germans used it. Has come along way since then:

Turning Coal into Liquid*Fuel - Brief Analysis #656

Here's some highlights:

Quote:
Benefit: Cleaner Energy. CTLs are less polluting than traditional fossil fuels. According to the University of Kentucky:
  • Compared to ultra-low sulfur diesel as a transportation fuel, liquefied coal emits 60 percent fewer hydrocarbons per gallon,
  • 10 percent less nitrous oxides, and
  • 55 percent less particulate matter.
Quote:
Benefit: Clean Electric Power. CTL production discharges excess steam that can be used to produce electricity. Electricity produced as a by-product of CTLs is incredibly clean. Such power generators emit 41 percent to 78 percent less regulated pollutants than similar-size traditional fossil fuel-fired electric plants. For example
This process can also utilize coal that may not be used in conventional power plants as well so impact on the coal supply which is enormous to begin with is not that great. What's interesting is you could be killing two birds with one stone, creating fuel for vehicles and generating electric using the excessive heat produced during the process.

Sure, as fossil fuels become more expensive syn fuels will become an attractive option. At some point we're all going to have to tell the flippin' Serra Club to sit-down, shut-up and stay of the adult's conversation. I'm sick and tired of us fighting wars in the Middle East and kissing Saudi butt to keep the juice flowing when we could produce our own energy and employ a few Americans in the process. H2 is another fuel that may be produced domestically, but we're never going to get there as long as lobbyists for tree hugger groups write the bills our elected officials pass without reading.

Maybe when we dump the libs in the next couple cycles we can get past this AGW sham and take care of our energy needs the way intelligent adults would.

Sounds good, but we can't charge them in any significant numbers because the grid is barely hanging on as is. We have to start with the obvious rather than the feel-good photo-op stuff.

But "God" said that "there's no such thing as clean coal"!

lately, it seems that our government is doing anything possible to retard our development, while the chinese are on track with coal production and oil contracts. if we don't get our act together, we are going to be dealing with some very hard times in the future!

I agree. However, we all know obama and the libs are trying to bankrupt the "dirty" coal industry.

You need to stop driving your car as well as heating and cooling your house immediately. Send a memo to Babs Streisand and Al Gore as well. By the way, don't use anything made of plastic also.

I've got a GREAT IDEA! Let's use NUCLEAR ENERGY, COAL, SHALE OIL, NATURAL GAS AND OFFSHORE DRILLING INSTEAD!!!! Problem solved. Oh........I forgot......the left already killed those options. Let's import more oil.
