The Capitol has a few statues, confederate dead, women of the confederacy exc. Why? Why are people so happy to keep open such a terrible chapter of our history? Its not like anyone directly affected is still around except black people who would still be slaves if the confederates had there way. Maybe its just my northern education, but this stuff seems odd. Why don't people demand this stuff be taken down? How do people get away with bumperstickers and flags that have such racist sentiments to them? It's like everyone here just accepts it even if they don't agree with it.

You don't "erase" history just to placate folks who don't like it

Reason: Please don't tell someone to "go home" -- thanks.

The fact that the NC Capitol has statues honoring its (the state's) dead in a war should not be interpreted that "NC wants to enslave black people". It's a historical memorial. Most who fought in the Civil War were young kids who were forced to do so (like many wars) and you certainly can't say that every one of them supported slavery. Have you read Cold Mountain (or seen the movie)? Interesting snapshot of the way of life for Southern soldiers.
This is a completely different issue from those who ride around with Confederate flags on their trucks.
"History is written by the victors." ~ Winston Churchill
Well, here you have a chance to see a bit of history from the perspective of the vanquished.
Those of us who grew up in the North don't really think about the Civil War except as an event in our nation's distant past. But in the South, where much of the war was fought, and where much damage was inflicted, and where Reconstruction took its own economic toll, it is not so easily forgotten. You cannot begin to understand the South today without understanding its history.
While there are certainly modern day racists who have adopted Civil War symbols and attempted to distort their history and meaning, it does not mean that everything about the Civil War is itself racist.
Because it's a part of our history... it makes us who we are down here and the confederacy was more than just slavery. Yes it's your northern education.

do not go to Cherokee, nc or you will see alot . there is more confederate stuff than Native american
Like others have said...it's history. You don't get to just keep the parts you like or agree with.
As far as the bumper stickers...its called free speech. You don't have to agree with it.
I don't like them, either...but its their right.
It's the South. Those are statues of our relatives - who, btw, did not want to fight that war. Less than 11% of the residents of NC owned slaves, for God's sake. Your education evidently left out a lot. We all have relatives who didn't come home - or came home badly wounded. Women were left behind to raise children and try to run farms on their own. NC lost more troops than any other state - and we were reluctant to even secede. In many cases, our men were conscripted as young as 15 to fight in a war they didn't even relate to - except insofar as they were protecting their own homes.
It is a sad time in our state's history - and not something any of us would WANT to forget or pretend didn't happen.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it - or so I have heard it said.
