The average June-August 2009 summer temperature for the contiguous United States was below average – the 34th coolest on record, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. August was also below the long-term average. The analysis is based on records dating back to 1895.

It's cooler in ONE PART of the world(uh, the US is NOT the entire world, hope that doesn't shock you but I guess that MINOR error can be overlooked )
And since most repubs have never attended a science class and think science is witchcraft...I'll explain. You are right , it should be called something other than Global Warming because that confuses the ...er...less educated.
And scientists do want to change what they call it to be more accurate.
Now , for your first science lesson....here's a quicky.
When ice melts from WARMTH it COOLS the water around it which has a ripple effect on weather around the world. (Remember ? the US is not the entire world).
Obviously some people here either don't live in Texas or know that we've had over 60 straight 100 degree days (making it one of the hottest summers yet, beating even last summer). This is completely abnormal even for us. Hell is probably only slightly hotter. Something is wrong here.

And Alaska had a very warm summer as well. However those facts mean very little to nothing when debating climate change on a global scale.

With any regression line, there are always outliers. One of the best ways to "lie with statistics" is to take any two points on a regression line and show they don't follow the pattern.
If you don't understanding regression lines, I suggestion a inferential statstics course.
Just more confirmation of the NeoConfuseds' inability to see the big picture.
Well pieces of the big picture include a global cooling trend over the last decade. I'll also add average temperatures last year in the US were average, which would be another piece of the big picture. How many more pieces of the big picture do you need before global warming becomes questionable?

A simple course in Env. Science and Geography would clear up the "mystery" for you:
Per NOAA the warmest years on record have all been since 2000.
"ScienceDaily (Dec. 13, 2007) — The decade of 1998-2007 is the warmest on record, according to data sources obtained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)."
One question: What makes someone deny the obvious?
