On the surface, like so many other bills from Congress, the "Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009" (ALL Democrat sponsors) seems to have good intentions: clean up the food supply from all the recent outbreaks of food contamination.
WTF? Are the Democrats selling out to big agriculture again? I thought ONLY the evil Repugnicans were supposed to do that? I'm really confused now...
Oh, by the way. Where on MSNBC, CNN, AP, et al are the in-depth reporting on this below the radar bill? They are apparently too busy devoting all their resources to Palin's book to be bothered to cover this bill... Oh, I see. In depth coverage of this bill would make the Democrats look bad. Oh no, no biased reporting here.
Best government money can buy. Big Ag wants to own it all. They won't buy out the small guy..they will just regulate him out of business.
The risk is much greater for poisoning from big Ag then the small farmer. The small farmers take much better care of their animals and crops. The small farmer eats what he sells.

Is this the bill that would make it illegal to operate a farmer's market stand, where a small farmer can sell their veggies?
American's just want a can of corn. They're more pre-occupied with the means by which to acquire that corn (ie. a job and $$$) than the very slim possibility that that can of corn is going to kill them.

Not illegal, just highly regulated. Too high to afford to even bother.
I have chickens and sell my extra eggs. I charge $2/doz. You can go buy the "organic" big Ag eggs at the store for over $4.50/doz.
I don't sell much though..enough to pay for feed/scratch for them..so they earn their keep.
Start regulating me for the couple of dozen eggs I sell and I'll just stop.
There have been dozens of bills introduced and voted on that the media doesn't report. What made you choose this particular bill?
Glad you asked!
Because if Republicans sponsored this bill, we would be getting 24/7 coverage from CNN, AP, and MSNBC on how "there goes those evil Republicans siding up with big Agriculture". We would get whole hour Frontline in depth shows about this. And actually, I wouldn't be surprised of Republican backing on this too.
However, isn't it the position of liberals and Democrats in general of being anti-big business? Aren't we supposed to be outraged about Walmart and health insurance companies? Isn't big agriculture's poor farming practices that destroy the environment and introduce genetically modified crops? OK, if that's true, why are the Democrats basically "giving away the farm" (sorry, couldn't help it) to big Agriculture? Especially on a critical part of American infrastructure (food)? Isn't this bill the antithesis of liberal thinking? Then why is Waxman et al supporting this? Hence the confusion...
