My favourite one was told to me by a friend of one of my German inlaws last year.

This chap worked with Werhner Von Braun on the Nazi German project to develop the V1 and V2 rockets in the 1940's.

Of course the Americans gave Werhner Von Braun gave refuge in 1945 on the basis that Von Braun would build rockets for the yanks in return for safe refuge.

Werhner Von Braun eventually developed the rocket that allowed the likes of John Glenn and Neil Armstrong to travel in to space.
Von Braun was head of NASA until 1972.

The chap who worked with Von Braun in Germany in the period 1942-1945 told me that he had in fact stayed in touch with Von Braun after he moved to America.

According to this chap, Von Braun told him that he gave Armstrong a Nazi flag for the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in July 1969.
Armstrong was to place the Nazi flag on the Moons surface, for Von Braun, on the basis of "paying tribute to my beloved Furhrer, Adolf Hitler, who made all of this (NASA and the moonlandings) possible. None of which would have been achieved without German engineering".

Interesting conspiracy theory.

There are no official photographs of Armstrong and Von Braun together (as NASA did not want their hero to be recorded with a "nazi").
Indeed, President Eisenhower refused to be officially photographed with Von Braun in 1958 when NASA was formally opened.

My favourite conspiracy theory came from the left during the Bush Administration. They claimed that Bush has planned 9/11 and orchestrated the whole thing. Countless liberals have told me that the World Trade Centre buildings were blown up by the Bush Administration. I even had one liberal show me a picture, where she said that Bush flew the plane into the building himself and jumped out with a parachute the minute before it hit.

And the Republicans are crazy? Please.

Chimpy Mc flightsuit wouldn't jump from a plane. He'd be afraid of landing on his num nums.

I could argue with the 9/11 twoofers for hours. Not because of their basic premise that the government could be corrupt, but because they use so much erroneous information to "prove" it.

But my all-time favorite conspiracy theory is an oldie-but-goody. Predates the Internet: The government is putting drugs into Church's Friend Chicken (sometimes it's KFC) that will make black men sterile.

Doesn't seem to be working, the but myth persists. I actually know a well-educated black man (Master's degree) who thinks this story might be true.

Conspiracies are by nature, a conspiracy. So trying to convince a conspiracy theorist that it isn't true, is not going to work because they would naturally believe that there is a conspiracy to cover it up. Most conspiracy theorists are scary people, especially those on the left. There probably are a few really big conspiracies though. We'll never know about them, though.

There was a great documentary done by the History Channel or Discovery Channel (don't remember which), where they investigated and did lab tests to try and confirm the claims by the wacko 9/11 conspiracy people. They took the tack that the theories/hypotheses were correct, and they tried to scientifically prove them.

One of my favorite parts was the debunking of the claim that somehow thermite was the cause of the twin towers coming down. The TV folks tested thermite and looked at what it would take to melt steel beams. Even if someone could have gotten into the WTC with thermite, it would have taken massive quanitites and anyone setting this up would have been noticed. Then, based on the tests, the thermite would not necessarily burn through the steel and would have to be very precisely placed. People would have seen the trucks delivering the thermite and the massive numbers of people deploying it. Again, just not plausible, and the documentary had numerous examples of evidence for what actually happened and against some conspiracy theory.

I guess some people just can't bear the thought that things can be random and happen at a moment's notice. The feel more comforted in thinking that some massive conspiracy must be the cause. They just ignore anything that doesn't mesh with their theory and when facts begin to unravel their tale, they step around them.

Most definitely my favorite conspiracy is the Roswell aliens story where the Federal government supposedly covered up the crash of an alien spaceship near Corona, New Mexico in 1947. I find it easy to believe an advanced race of beings traveled millions of light years across the vacuum of space and through dangerous asteroid belts, comic rays and the many other dangers of space and were forced to crash on Earth during a southwestern thunderstorm. However, when it comes to believing the Federal government can maintain a secret for 62 years, the conspiracy loses me.

No, liberals just can not stomach the idea that Islam is not a religion of peace like they all repeat ad nauseum. So they make up conspiracy theories against the President of the United States. It's a very sad state these people are in. I hope "BIG PHARMA" can come up with a treatment for it soon, because they people are seriously out of it.

Yeah, with newspapers like the New York Times it's hard for this country to keep any secrets.
