WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Thursday scrapped the Bush-era plan for a missile shield to defend Eastern Europe, prompting some Republicans to immediately accuse the White House of going soft.

Obama promised a redesigned defensive system, saying it would be cheaper, quicker and more effective against the threat from Iranian missiles. The Bush-era plan had complicated ties with Russia, which objected to where the shield installations would be built.

How much did the Bush-era Europe missle shield cost each year? I didn't see a figure in the article.

Expect an attack by Israel on Iranian bases. It has been announced on the same day that Obama has declined to build a missile shield, that Iran has the capability to build a bomb and they have the missiles to deliver them. If let alone, Iran will drop a bomb on Israel. I back Israels self defense. Obviously, Obama has no backbone.

How would building a missile shield in Poland stop Iran dropping a bomb on Israel?

Either I am terribly confused or you are, and I will put money that says it ain't me. The shield in question (or should I say the questionable shield) was for Easter Europe, Poland, the Czech Republic etc, not Israel so I'm having a hard time relating your comments to reality.

So by appeasing Russia by doing this, he gets the green light to let Israel go after Iran and Russia will not interfere. Okay, that makes sense although Reagan could have had both while Obama has to settle for an even trade. Or he'd have just stopped Iran from going after nukes and Russia would have kept quiet.

Totally irresponsible on the part of this "President". Once again, he has snubbed (abandoned) our allies. But what would you expect from a "president" that hates America?

2010 cannot come soon enough, and we will snip his you know whats and render him ineffective. It is this mans purpose to destroy America. We cannot let that happen.

Obama is in full retreat mode, he is proving to be weaker than Carter.

The missile shield in Eastern Europe idea made no sense from the get-go. No way it would protect anyone from Russia's massive arsenal, and why build a defense system so far from Iran when we already have one in place in Israel?

The whole thing was a finger poked into Russia's eye. I thought at first that it was done for no good reason, but now I'm beginning to wonder if Bush didn't do it just so his successor could undo it and take away another excuse for the Russian bear to perform its tiresome cold war bully act.

Think about it: Russia can't very well continue to be peeved: we did what they wanted and got rid of a PLAN that offended them. Big whoop. On the other hand, they can't very well crow about how they made Obama back down without looking like (the) warmongers (that they are).

So -- fences to mend in Poland (the Czechs are probably relieved). I recommend inviting Mr. Tusk to Washington for high-level talks, and sending him home with a few shiny new F-16s and Patriot batteries "pointed at Iran." Heck, the mid-range missile threat is more of a concern to the Poles than ICBMs, anyway.

Good move on Obama's part. And maybe, just maybe, he owes Mr. Bush a debt of gratitude...
