In support of such a claim, it can be pointed out that most (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090107/ap_on_he_me/med_teen_births - broken link) of those states with the highest teenage birth rates are in the South, and many of these are Red states. These numbers are a bit skewed, however, by the fact that a high abortion rate can mask a similarly high pregnancy rate. Still, even when comparing overall teenage pregnancy rates, it is clear that the South is not doing well. According to the Guttmach Institute (an arm of Planned Parenthood; figures are for 2000, the latest I can find), the five states with the highest teenage pregnancy rates per 1000 girls are (with Abortion rank and percentage):

1. Nevada: Pregnancy rate 113/1000 (Abortion: 4th highest; 36%)
2. Arizona: 104 (A 19th; 21%)
3. Mississippi: 103 (A 28th; 16%)
4. New Mexico: 103 (A 18th; 22%)
5. Texas: 101 (A 26th; 17%)

Nevertheless, the fact that these are all in the South, and include some states with pro-choice policies (e.g. Guttmacher ranks (http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2006/02/28/IB2006n1.pdf - broken link) New Mexico the 6th best for “efforts to help women avoid unplanned pregnancy”) strongly points to a cultural factor–this is clearly not just a matter of access to contraception and abortion or even “Red vs. Blue.” Thus, some very Red and very anti-abortion Midwestern states (like the Dakotas) are among the lowest in pregnancy and birth rates: North Dakota has the best overall teenage pregnancy rate (42/1000) and the 3rd best abortion rate (8%); South Dakota has the 7th best pregnancy rate (54/1000) and the 2nd best abortion rate (7%).

According the Guttmacher Institute’s own numbers, the five states with the highest teenage abortion rates are all among the top 16 highest teenage pregnancy rates, and all are Blue states (with overall teenage pregnancy rank and rate/1000 girls):

1. New Jersey: 47% Abortion rate (Pregnancy rank 16th highest; 90/1000)
2. New York: 46% (P 14th; 91)
3. Maryland: 38% (P 13th; 91)
4. Nevada: 36% (P 1st; 113)
5. California: 36% (P 7th; 96)

This topic was in another thread but, I am glad you posted the abortion factor. I do not see a huge disparity between the states ranking in the top 16.

North Dakota is the lowest and they also have the lowest number of teenagers - guess what less teens means less teen sex and even taking into the consideration of 1/1000 - hey access is opportunity.

Also, what is the point in relating them to Red/Blue states. Teen behavior crosses all lines - someone tried to make it a religious issue of hypocrisy even though #1 and #2 weren't even in the bible belt (in the other thread) and now it is a political issue?

Perhaps there are less gay and lesbian couples in the red states. That should be thrown in for good measure. More gays and lesbians equals less pregnancy.

The whole - red state/blue state is a non-issue. California is a blue state and so is Nevada (#7 and #1 respectively.)

I learned a long time ago that if you have a set of numbers, you can manipulate them into proving any cause.

Give me enough time and I could use these numbers to support the existence of the Easter Bunny!

Look at the methodology on "estimating" abortion and you will see just how accurate these numbers are... HIPAA is in place now so these figures will be even harder to calculate in the future.

can you say GHETTOS?! Blue states have more under priviledged areas, meaning more ghettos. They have kids to get more welfare among other reasons like just not responsible or smart.

The left thinks they are smart by thinking that using the hypocrisy religious angle is why this is happening. All the while ignoring the other numbers in conjunction to it all.

Abortion is legal in the US.
Sorry you men don't like it, but that's how it is.
If these girls, who could not have been pregnant without sperm, gave birth, you'd all try to deny them public assistance.
Women as -*****, harlot, sinner, as always.

Here is a book you can pick up and read on ghettos if you choose to!

EDITORIAL: Poverty, gangs and violence

Under the guidance of his professor, he began what became a 10-year association with the Black Kings gang, controlling a large part of one of the worst ghettos in the United States, the Robert Taylor Towers in Chicago. The book is an account of that association. It will astound you.

'What the devil is the point of your posting and what does that have to do with which states perform the most abortions?

As for public assistance, it takes 2 to make a baby. Women know how to protect themselves, many either do not want to bother, they have a need to be mommies regardless or they know one more baby, a little bigger the check. Don't blame the guys totally!!!!

no no no... Now if your going to help Robert out with his assignment, make sure you do not submit incomplete information. NOW lets try this again. List ALL of the "poorest" area's in BOTH the "BLUE and RED" states NOT the top 10, that was NOT Roberts statement. To help you out, the clock will restart. tick tock.

It would appear to me that those who are opposed to abortion - Conservatives (generally) - and those who favor choice - Liberals (generally) - are practicing what their 'side' advocates. Then you have to figure that the more Liberals there are aborting their potential offspring, the less Liberal children who will become Liberal adults there will be which is a favorable outcome for Conservatives...

A win-win.
