Nah, the happiness is due to heavy drinking in Denmark, and the prevalence of gorgeous women in Sweden.

Get me liquored up with a pretty woman at my side, and I'd be pretty happy too

The drunk nation myth is...a myth...
I know Sweden well & Denmark a little.
They just party on Sat evenings & drink some...
No big deal...

I have no interest in the great USA becoming mediocre and inconsequential -- and happy about it -- like many small European countries.
Denmark has won 2.3, Sweden 3.01 nobel prices per mil citizen whereas USA has 1.01. So apparently our method of free education for everyone regardless of social standing works just fine.

It's their system, it's successful for them and they are obviously happy with it. Not everybody wants or aspires to the type of economic system that Americans have.

The thing that seems to predominate in economic systems like these is that people have a greater sense of community and doing what is best for the common good than Americans have. The basic American Conservative ethos is I've got mine and if you don't have yours then **** you.

FOR EVERYONE.

Pay high taxes

Get good services

get Free education which in turn gets you a good job

good jobs pay well

Good health care aids in you keeping that job

Good paying jobs mean people can buy goods and houses.....

which in turn gives money to others

So others make money

the economy is good

money isn't stuck at the top

it's MOVING

around to ALL tax payers
Another outcome of this is because more people are making good incomes poverty is lower and there is LESS CRIME.

Also how sustainable would a Nordic style system be for America when considering the changes coming with our taxpayer population? 78 million U.S baby boomers are entering retirement. Who do you tax to support an American Nordic style system?

Much of Europe will be asking the same questions:

I didn't see Sweden, Denmark, Finland, or Norway mentioned in this story. Overall unemployment tends to lower in these countries compared to England, France and Germany.

American culture is an individual oriented culture. The cultures in Scandinavian countries are more community oriented. If that is the cultural tradition and you've been brought up in that type of culture then it's easy to adapt to.

We are also society that doesn't take care of old people well. That's what happens in an individual oriented society.
