Every 18 seconds, an American is busted for drug possession, according to Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) crime statistics released Monday.

The new statistics point to a continued emphasis on drug interdiction -- otherwise known as the "war on drugs" -- that more and more law enforcement officers are now questioning.

I sometimes think the War on Drugs is actually making us money (covertly of course).
Imagine all the groups and people who would be effected and all the extra money we had if we declared the War on Drugs over ?

We'll never win that war like we'll never win the War on Terror. To fight something abstract in nature means you never actually end it. They are money generators for all involved.

I'm not FOR either drugs or terrorism but I see this as a black hole business.

The government has its head up the proverbial you know where... If you go to where these drugs are made and kill everyone... there would be no drugs anywhere... instead of focusing on the makers, we are focusing on the deliverers... There was never a real war on drugs... it was to soothe public outcry while the politics of influencing foreign governments by not threatening their main source of income... EVERYBODY knows where they are... its a simple matter of going in and killing all the drug makers..... Mexico KNOWS where the drug cartels are... they are just messing around with the small time dealers and make it seem like they are doing something...

I have a better idea let's go to where the drugs are used and kill everyone. If there are users there will always be makers, if there are no users there will be no makers!

How about legalising drugs? I mean people that are addicted could go to a doctor or some medical facility and get their drugs there. That sounds pretty crazy, I know. But think about it. People are going to take drugs no matter what. You cant win this war. So isn't it better to give those addicts what they need and at the same time try to help them at those facilities? Money is spend on resocialization anyways and think of all the money spend on the war on drugs.

That is one way to do things but the outcry would be negative... if you told people you were going to kill the drug makers of foreign countries... you will get more public support...

What do you suppose we do with gambling addicts? Give them money to go gamble? Ignoring a problem doesn't fix a problem...

No, we have to support them to overcome their addiction, but the thread is about war on drugs and how costly that is. And I offered a solution that peolpe should at least think about. I know my solution will never be the reality in the US, but something needs to be done, and thats why we need to think about all options.

Your idea is pretty unrealistic as well . Mexico will definitely not let the US into their country to kill drug makers.
