i don't generally call people racist for "opposing obama", but with most of the birthers, it think it has to have something to do with his color, or his name. i honestly don't believe if we had a white president named john smith whose father was an immigrant from the uk that there would be this kind of freakout over his national origins. maybe it would come up (like it did with mccain), but there wouldn't be this insistence that he must be foreign despite all evidence to the contrary. i find it hard to believe it has nothing to do with the fact that obama looks "foreign" and has a foreign-sounding name.

birthers' theories fly in the face of all reason. i think pommysmommy proved that tonight.

There are posters here who constantly refer to Obama as "hussein". The idea seems to be to point out, time and again, that Obama has a (gasp!) Muslim/Arabic middle name, like that's something we should be afraid of or at the least, find objectionable.

I contend that it is easier to label someone who opposes Obama a racist, than to actually engage in a discussion of the policies and rhetoric he puts out. When a democrat doesn't want to legitimately defend a position they support of the Presidents, instead of answering their opponent on the issue, they cry racism.

Read the following for a nice education on the discussion about Obama and racism.

The hussein obama sheep uses the race card in hopes they can distract people from talking about hussein obama's lack of character

I disagree with your above opinion.

Jimmy Carter is a good example.

I openly oppose Obama but I've never been labeled a racist for criticizing him or his policies. In fairness to the Left, I've been called a lot of things by them but not a racist. Likewise, I haven't really heard the Right criticisize Obama on grounds of race either. I don't care what anyone says on this forum. Americans, both conservatives and liberals have been respectful to the President regarding his race. Let's not bring the race card into this now.

Nobody thinks all who oppose Obama are bigots. There's legitimate policy disagreements that would exist from anyone implementing the conventional Democratic policies he is. When Clinton was elected, people thought he was going to turn the country socialist and take their guns away. Turned out he ran one of the most effective governments in history.

That said, people who adhere to the myth that Obama was born other than the U.S., despite ample evidence to refute their belief, are racists. There is simply no reasonable argument upon which to stand any longer and it has nothing to do with policy.

In addition, the above poster illustrates racist bigotry as well. S/he has admitted that s/he uses the name "hussein obama" as an attempt to slight and diminish Obama. Now, given that admitted fact, what would be insulting about the name Hussein to anyone but a bigot who sees people of a different race / culture as inferior?

I think it's beautiful that we elected a man in the United States with the middle name Hussein, and his eligibility is not in question in any legal way, even if you disagree with his policies or his governance. So, I think it's just a matter of what people focus on in their opposition.

I agree with Obama that the health care issue has nothing to do with race for a vast, vast majority of his opposition.

What position of President Obama's did Jimmy Carter NOT want to defend?

Re-read the statement with which I disagreed.

I have noticed some of those on the right suggest they are being accused of racism if they criticize Obama much more than I have seen those on the left suggest those who criticize Obama are racist.

Fact of the matter is other than comments directed at the birthers I have seen very little of the left suggesting criticism of Obama is based on race.. And well the bithers well deserve it because what else could it. Hell even Palin and Coulter of all people aren't birthers.

Now I have also seen some criticism of Wilson for his comments being racially motivated. However, I disagree with those comments, and they are the minority of the comments directed at him, and the racial accusations against Wilson (again I disagree with them) are based off his ties to Confederate organizations, the confederate flag on the state capitol and his denouncing of Thurmond's daughter for revealing he had a black child.
