As long as racism is tolerated within their party, Southern Republicans shouldn't act too surprised when they get pushed on the issue.

There must be some powerful atmospheric agents shaping the politics of South Carolina.

If you want to know what South Carolina politics looks like, google "Maurice Bessinger". He owns a chain of BBQ restaurants here and ran for governor in 1974. He was pictured in a white Colonel Sanders suit riding a white horse (no symbolism there at all), and he has been a close friend and confidant of an enormous number of politicians here.

His main restaurant is about three miles from the State House and has been a popular spot for political meetings for years.

I am a proud, Southern woman with deep Conservative roots. I dare you to call me a racist just because I am proud to be a southerner (you'd be amazed by our hospitality unless you start throwing around racist as an adjective used to describe us), AND I am just as proud to have my deep Conservative roots. Those two characteristics have poured themselves over into every other aspect of my life including my relationship with my Lord and my children. WHAT IS RACIST ABOUT THAT??

Southern democrats kept the black man in chains for close to 130 years after the end of the Civil War.
Damage like that cannot be easily undone.
