Army chief warns of 'terrifying prospect' of failure in Afghanistan - Telegraph

Pakistan!?! Equating Pakistan with Afghanistan is the height of ridiculousness, as Sir David should well know. Pakistan, as crazy as it gets, has a long tradition of a central government, it has a functioning military, and it has a intelligence service which because of it's continued support for he Taliban and al Qaeda for its own narrow nationalist reasons, is fully capable of infiltrating both. In Pakistan, unlike Afghanistan a real genuine counter insurgency is more than possible. As a result I put Sir David's remarks right there with that other British military genius, Sir George Burrows.

Clobbered? All of these Taliban forces came into being on January 20th? Get real!! Never mind that's the dream of fools and small children.

This was so astounding, I had to read it twice.

Of course, why not! Let obama take all the time he needs (analysis paralysis) while the situation there quickly deteriorates and more US soldiers are killed. I'm sure he has more important priorities.....like flitting here and there, watching himself in front of the cameras.

I can just hear his aids, "Yes, Mr. President, all the stations are televising you". We just watched his total humiliation at the hands of a corrupt IOC and now we can watch as he gets his a** handed to him by AQ and the Taliban - who will surely throw a victory party in the caves.

And true. Are you going to deny that AQ was driven from Iraq because of our troop surge? Going to deny they've been holed up in the mountainous regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan for a long, long time?

He wasn't equating them - he is saying if AQ once again has a safe haven in Afghanistan, with the Taliban, they next target will in all likelihood be to destabilize Pakistan/India relations and get a hold of of some nukes.

What do you think AQ would do with nukes in their hands?

one big problem with this war, and any war actually, is corruption. money sent for the war is often diverted:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Two Pakistani generals tell the AP that between 2002 and 2008, only $500 million of $6.6 billion in American aid actually made it to the Pakistani military. The U.S. has long suspected much of the money it sent to Pakistan to help battle militants has been diverted to the domestic economy and other causes.

the people who think that the money that we are sending to fight these "wars" isn't still being diverted now are smoking those economic "green shoots".......

Now we can understand, once again, why liberals are historically not to be trusted with foreign policy.

Back your general and send more troops, David Miliband urges Barack Obama - Times Online

Back your general and send more troops, David Miliband urges Barack Obama

Quote:
David Miliband urged President Obama to embrace a renewed “hearts and minds” strategy in Afghanistan as ministers indicated that they would not send more British troops unless the US adopted such an approach.

The Foreign Secretary did not mention America by name but called on every government in the coalition to back troops, aid workers and diplomats in support of a clear plan. “We came into this together. We see it through — together,” he told the Labour conference in Brighton.
But you see, obama's "war of necessity", the "right war", the "war we had to win" in order to keep the US safe was just another campaign slogan. He really, really didn't mean it.

that post isn't particularly helpful to your support of obama, since obama always favored an afghanistan invasion and now perhaps he does not, but can't seem to decide either way now.

i think it is disgraceful not to decide, when the aggression towards our soldiers is clearly escalating and he needs to make some kind of decision!
