Also, how in world are cigarettes even still legal??!?!?

If I made a product that was addictive and lethal, I'd be shut down before the labels go on.....weird to me....
Cigarettes are still legal because we will never again make the mistake of prohibition. If we make cigarettes illegal, why not alcohol? And McDonalds? And junk food? Where would it end?

Native American reservations are "soverign nations" within the USA. They have to work out some "deals" with states, and the federal government, but they don't have to report their sales figures.

There is no way anyone can honestly know how many people smoke, or don't smoke based on state sales figures. There are so many variables. (As I said, we buy cigarettes at Indian casinos, and across the state line in Nevada.) We never, ever buy cigarettes in Arizona anymore...due to the higher taxes.

Casinos in Nevada sell to a lot of tourists too...not just locals. So, their sales figures don't represent the ratio of smokers in Nevada either.

Has any state agency ever asked you if you smoke or not? Have you been part of any survey concerning smoking? We haven't!

I sure resent the way that anti-smoking and health groups claim to know "who smokes" and "who doesn't smoke" in each area. This seems like "baloney" to me!

Thanks for writing. Hope you have a nice weekend. Good luck with sales at your bar and restaurant! Claire

Claire :
Thanks for the article on Alabama. Where do people get that 80% of Americans don't smoke? That stat has been bantered around by several people on this forum. I can't find the research to support that anywhere! As I have said, in other posts, if the question were to be asked, "Should the government be involved in private LEGAL business operations? Most people would say, NO.

Some people say that smoking is a public health issue. In many ways it is. But, so is alcohol, fast food restaurants, video games (the inactivity of our youth), television (couch potato syndrome), sculpted nails (chemicals you are exposed to), just to name a few. They are all public health issues.

Some say that smoking is intrusive on innocent people. I feel that you are the person that makes that decision. You have the choice of being a willing participant or not. Once again, posting of SMOKING PERMITTED or SMOKING PROHIBITTED signs would be the answer. Make your own informed choices, America. I CHOOSE to go to a salon that doesn't do nails because it is toxic, I don't like the smell and it bothers my eyes. You could have the same choice when it come to smoking and non-smoking establishments. We, as Americans, do have a choice as long as Gov't doesn't get involved. Once the government becomes involved, choices are diminished or become non-existent. -Castaway

Thanks for writing.

I do a lot of research on the Internet each day, but I'm not really an expert when it comes to smoking bans.

I've heard of a few judges ruling against bans....but higher courts over-turned their rulings.

Here's a couple of my favorite sites:

NewsNow: Smoking Ban

New Additions

I agree with everything you wrote....When we put government in the middle of things, we're making a big mistake.

I've been allergic to "pine" cleaners all of my life. But, I don't have the right to make them illegal or force others to stop using "pine" cleaners. (Just because they have a negative effect on me.)

I avoid "pine" cleaners the best I can....If I notice the smell of "pine" when I step into a public bathroom, I turn around and walk out. Some of the chemicals in beauty shops seem to bother me too. (As you mentioned in your post.)

Anyway, thanks for writing! More soon, Claire

To all the smokers in this thread: PLEASE STOP SMOKING.

It's difficult, it's infuriating, it makes you angry and/or sad, it puts on weight, and changes your personality, and makes it hard to think, to read, even to sleep.

I know all this, because I went through it, fifteen years ago. And I'm a deeply flawed person with all kinds of hangups and weaknesses. But I went through it, and slowly all the things that were wrong got right.

I did it. AND SO CAN YOU.

It's great that you quit smoking, and I'm glad you feel better now.

To be honest, everyone doesn't want to quit smoking. And some of us don't feel guilty for smoking.

But, I think it's wonderful that you wanted to quit, and did quit, and feel better now. Claire

Thanks, Desertlovers. I posted that because I used to think I didn't want to quit, either, having smoked three packs a day for nearly 27 years.

And I didn't feel guilty, either. I just wanted to be alive to see my grandchildren.

I'm just trying in my clumsy way to remind anyone who wants to quit that they can do it...

Thank you again for the very kind thoughts!

Thanks for writing. I'm glad you're doing better, and happy that you quit smoking.

There really aren't any guarantees in life....I just lost my son a few months ago and he was only 37. (His death had nothing to do with smoking.)

My other son is 35 and he has another brain tumor. (He had his first brain tumor when he was only 22.) His first brain tumor went undetected even tho he went to see lots of doctors for the headaches he kept having at the time....

His first tumor eventually burst, and it caused him to lost eye-sight in one eye. He almost died several times, and he had to have most of his pituitary gland removed. Today, he takes life-sustaining medicine to replace the function of his pituitary gland.

It's spooky that he has another brain tumor, but we're all trying to stay strong. His medical condition has nothing to do with smoking.

Anything and everything could happen to us at any time! We may be around to see our grandkids grow up, or we could lose one or several of our children early in life....without warning.

I don't make any assumptions about anything anymore....I've learned the hard way that there are no guarantees in life. We have no idea how long we will live, or how long the people around us may live, etc.

I had a friend who was a total "health-fanatic." She didn't eat meat, she didn't drink, smoke, or do anything that she considered "un-healthy." But yet, she kept developing cancer in different parts of her body in her 40's, and died. When she got close to dying, she said she was sorry that she sacrificed so much for "health" during her life...because it didn't "pay-off." Really sad.

Anyway, I just wanted to share how I feel about things. Thanks, Claire

How in the world did it add weight to you? Smoking increases your BMR.

I'm sorry if my syntax was unclear. I was referring to quitting smoking.
