The inane Georgian represents a broader problem in modern American political discourse: it’s impossible to argue with leftists. It stems from the narrow way in which they phrase their beliefs. Namely, they do so in such a craftily insufferable manner that there’s no reasonable disagreement possible, leading to them trying to pigeonhole us as contemporary Klan members.

I thought the linked column about Carter and his sentiments was pretty accurate.
Also, saw a write up from PJ O'Rourke with some interesting observations about those who are in disagreement with Obama. His humor was pretty funny, but he said a lot within his observations:
I hadn't noticed I was a racist, but that was no doubt because I was too busy being a homophobe. Nancy Pelosi says the angry opposition to health care reform is like the angry opposition to gay rights that led to Harvey Milk being shot. Since I do not want America to suffer another Sean Penn movie, I will accept that I'm a homophobe, too. And I'm a male chauvinist due to the fact that I think Nancy Pelosi is blowing smoke--excuse me, carbon neutral, biodegradable airborne particulate matter--out her pantsuit.
So President Carter says something intelligent and backs it with evidence, and the right-wing smear machine starts bashing.
I wish you all had half of the class and decency of President Carter.
And remember - what he said was true. You all can deny it, and start up a reactive hissy fit - but that just makes you look worse.
Carter? Class and decency? Are you kidding!!! Is it class and decency to suck up and support dictators that have murdered millions of innocent people? Oh wait. I forgot if it comes from the left, death is acceptable and supported.

Yep. And lets not forget about him hiding out at Camp David during the hostage crisis.
