Well, I'll tell you that when people don't seem to have any prospects of getting a good raise or promoted, it really does something to your drive. Because of the economy, city workers have had pay freezes for the last year I believe & now there are pay freezes for at least the next two years if not more. It's hard to keep up motivation when the incentive just isn't there.

Another "dis-incentive" is watching people you work with part of mass layoffs. Gone, just like that and offshored their work. Where's the drive when it could be you next ... all just to make some good numbers for the next quarterly report ?

Happened at my place..three times this year. There's very little loyalty left. Oh people still show up and do their work but something is gone..you can tell.

There was a rumor going around that the city would have 20 furlough days next year....20!!!! Now, it turned out to be a load of bull, but if it were true, who the heck would stick around?

There was a time when businesses appreciated and rewarded hard work. The company took care of good employees with education, promotions, and healthcare. The key word in all businesses today is "GREED." Once an employee has peaked the modern company finds a way to dump him or her. Today each employee must look upon themselves as their own company and operate just like a big business. People must look to get the most out of any company they work for and constantly look for better opportunities being willing to change jobs on a dime.

Back in the day, I ran across a study that examined worker satisfaction (this was a huge area of study in the 80's) of retained workers at companies experiencing large layoffs, your observation is well supported by the literature. The stress of retained employees resulted in marked declines in productivity.

The only people who have a bad work ethic are:

A) the half that is abusing the welfare system (REGARDLESS of race) and

B) politicians (REGARDLESS of party)
