When the communists won the war, 1/2 of Europe was put under their domination. Personally, I still think it's incredible that the Western democracies were able to withstand it over the second-half of the 20th Century. Nobody defeated communism, it imploded on itself.

I challenge your logic. Hitler seems the WORST anti-communist. The results of his stupidity and blunders ended up causing much of Europe to be under Soviet control for 45 years. Then, the money spent by the western nations to contain Soviet expansionism detracted greatly from our investing in infrastructure, health care and many other things that are far more beneficial than thousands of nuclear weapons, millions of men in uniform, massive naval and air forces, etc. I've often said that both the USSR and the USA bankrupted each other in the cold war, it's just that the USA doesn't recognize it yet. The Cold War was really WW-III, but largely bloodless compared to the two preceding cataclysms.
And yes, looney Joe McCarthy would be a hero to the Rush Limbaughs, Glenn Becks and other fascists on the far right who want to shoot first no matter what.
