Down with Sarkozy. 47% of people did not vote for him and as a Leftie ( and proud to be so) I am less than thrilled as some fascist in waiting to be president of France. Segolene Royal was a less than inspiring candidate ( very little susbstance) but I'm afraid I still voted for her. It will be interesting to see how he does but I'm not holding my breath. Chirac was right-wing and had been there for 12 years and he has hardly managed to make France any better. If anything under him the gap between rich and poor got wider and social problems worse. It's hardly cause for celebration.

At least the crazy fascist Le Pen guy didn't get elected... any political party with "National" in its title shouldn't be trusted.

Must be why some in the US think Sarkozy and the right wing will favor America, by widening the rich/poor gap they'll make France more like America.
I'll at least give Sarkozy credit for being environmentally aware. I'd respect a "crunchy" conservative leader more than one who doesn't see the impact of global warming and similar issues on the present and future.
Looks like France finally came to it's senses and it's future can now be salvaged. Just when I wrote off France as turning (or it already is) a huge socialist Arab slum. Sarkozky - pro-America, pro-market, anti-crime, stronger immigration laws.
Behold, the average Frenchman will have to start working again for a living, getting rid of the guaranteed 35 hour a week work-week will be first on Sarkozky's agenda.

I was under the impression that most Arabs in France were concentrated in and around Paris. Am I mistaken?
I get the impression that Sarkozy is pro-America because Bush is still in office. I wonder how he would feel a few years from now if, say, President Clinton or Obama were to appeal for help in resolving Darfur.
I do agree that it may help the French economy if the 35-hour work week were lengthened (albeit with a corresponding increase in pay, I would hope). But I wouldn't mind a bit if we had the standard four weeks that France and many other European citizens get. I could use a vacation right now!

The gap between rich and poor doesn't really matter. What matters is your income vs cost of living, or in the case of a large group, the median household income vs cost of living.
To argue about the gap between rich and poor, to the exclusion of other economic measurement is disingenuous. Class warfare doesn't help anyone.
Does anyone actually know where Sarkozy stands on most issues? Or are people cheering just because he's labeled "conservative"?
What we do know is he ran as a very outspoken pro American, pro Bush, candidate and his opponent tryed to capitalize on that, there was a record turn out of over 80% with a very distinct difference in ideologys and he won by a strong margin! In FRANCE! So much for the whole world hates America! Good riddance Jaque Chirac!!
